Many think there was a water canopy around the earth. There
used to be lots of volcanic activity, that could have made a
previous greenhouse effect that ended up holding all the water
in the clouds, (water canopy).
It was going to break, so God warned some people and helped them survive. There are many flood stories.
Scaring little children with stories about the gods destroying us
whenever there is a natural disaster, has its' roots in
paganism.

Maybe he was sitting around one day watching some kid drown ants and the kid was having so much fun! God decided "HEY! I wanna try that". So he flood the earth and laughed. That was until he realized that if he drowned all of us he couldn't do it again. So hence only some places flooding every now and then.
