POOR YOU !
I think you should ,consult your doctor about this .
it may be something that is easily rectified .
you could have a vitamin deficiency .
( vitamin C or B12 etc )
an allergy can effect your skin
( soap , face cream or detergent and certain foods )
or a hormone imbalance
( can effect your skin and cause spots) ,
Or you may just be generally down, so your immune system is not functioning, as well as it should .
It is quite embarrassing, to have spots at any age .
and pretty uncomfortable too.
Get your general health checked out, as soon as possible .

I'm not 40, but here's my advice - you need to cleanse, tone & moisturize every single day (without fail) - within a week or so you'll stop getting the spots, and over some time your skin will be in a noticably better condition.
Just find a range of stuff that works best for you - I'd recommend the Seaweed line from the Body Shop. I've been using it for 10 months solid - it gets rid of spots straightaway, and it's much more effective than anything I've tried before.

I'm 43 and I find that Pantothenic Acid tablets (also known as vitamin B5) help a lot. This is after I have done 2 courses of accutane over the past 10 years, so I don't want to (and really can't) do that anymore. The vitamin B5 is inexpensive and you can get it almost anywhere that sells vitamins.

see a dermatologist. I am past forty and never had spots as a teen ager, It is adult acne and extremely treatable. But don't try to treat is yourself. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

Half of all acne is in adults. You need to visit a dermatologist and let him/her see if it is "regular" acne or rosacea and get on a regimen to control it. The regimens for both are somewhat different.
