A free roll is a tournament in which you can enter without paying a fee. There may be other restrictions such as being open to new players only or having accumulated x number of points on the site. If you play poker on-line I suggest you take advantage of every free roll you available to you.

A free roll is a game/tournament that has no "buy-in" or registering fee.

Usually a good amount of people will be in these since there's no fee to pay.

Free rolls are also used as sort of a marketing ploy to get new players because usually you'll have to register with the site in order to participate.

However, since the Buy-In is free...cash prizes are either only for use in other games on the site ("credits") or a very low actual cash prize.

That means you are entering a tournament with no entry fee but with a real $$$ prize. Spin Palace Poker has 3 daily free rolls worth $1000 each. You can find more about them at http://www.ranked-online-casinos.com/spinpalace-poker-review.html

A freeroll is a tournament that is free to enter but has a cash (or prize) for the winner(s)

The million dollar freerolls aren't really traditional freerolls because you need to qualify for them. Some sites such as http://www.ultimatepokerbankroll.com will give you a freeroll entry or a cash bonus for signing up through them though.

The million dollar freerolls are just an advertising gimmick though :(
