I have 2 livingrooms in my home. One is formal, and the other isn't. In my formal living room that is used when I have guests or get togethers, I have hardwood, with some strategically placed carpets. In the other livingroom, the one that my kids play in, I watch TV in, and the one that I generally live in, I have carpeting. You can get hypoallergenic, stain resistant carpeting. That's what I have in my livingroom.. think of the main purpose of your livingroom and decide from there.
If you don't watch TV , don't have kids, and don't spend alot of time there, then I would say that hardwood is a nice and beautiful choice.
If you watch TV, have kids, and like to spend lots of time in your livingroom, then carpet is more inviting, more liveable, and nicer on bare feet.

Our whole house had carpeting and we took it out and did hardwood floors everywhere but the kitchen and bathrooms. We have ceramic tile in the kitchen and bathrooms With a dog and 3 cats, I find it much easier to clean. I swiffer the hardwood every day and wash once a week with hardwood floor cleaner. Vinegar works well too on hardwood. My 20 yr. old is still a bit of a slob so the hardwood is a good choice. Hardwood scratches so you have to be careful and it also needs to be refinished when it starts to get dirt in the boards and when it starts to look dull. But their are new carpets out there that are phenominal now. Stain proof, odor proof, etc.

Hardwood, throughout the entire house. I have allergies and it helps. Carpet makes me wheeze. Also I have 2 dogs and 3 cats and its easier to keep the hardwood floor clean, I just could get the carpet clean enough.
Hardwood floors are also good for free entertainment if you have pets.

Hardwood by far.
1) it looks better
2) it's less maintenance (I have this theory that carpet was invented by a vacuum company!)
3) it's healthier (carpets, unless you vacuum at least every other day, and wash the often, are full of dust and dustmites, and germs)
4) if you decide to change your living room decoration and colors, it's easier to match than carpet. It's also easier to change an area rug than a carpet.
Hope this helps.

I like hardwood everywhere except the bedrooms. When I get into bed I don't want to bring any sand, dust, dirt with me. Even if you vacuum every day you still have it. So I have hardwood in my living and dining room, tile in my kitchen and bathrooms, and carpet in my bedrooms.

I like hardwood, because it gives the room warmth. You also have the option of adding rugs that can be easily changed, whereas if you have carpet, you're pretty much stuck once you make a decision.

carpet seems so much cozier and I always said I would never have hardwood in my house...yet here I am with hardwood not only in my living room but in my dining room as well. With having creepy crawly kids, I won't go back to rug until they are all grown up. Rug is cozier, but hardwood is easier to keep clean and safe for babies.

hardwood hands down
y? simply because its easier to clean and because no matter how much u clean a carpet u will still have dirt in it and allergens r more likely to sick around in the house causing sinus problem and allergies.
with a hard wood u need a mop and a broom and u can clean a small section if needed. with carpet a whole vaccum,

Hardwood. That way, as your taste change, you can do different things. If you want carpeting, you can get it. Or, you can put down area rugs.
Hardwood provides you more options than carpet.

Depends on your preference. If you have animals sometimes it isn't as good because the hair is hard to pick up. If you don't have animals it good to have because it is easy to clean and is not as susceptible to stains. The only thing with hardwood floors I would have to say is that when it is cold you have to wear warm clothes and socks because the house tends to stay cooler and when you have to refurbish the underlayment or a couple of boards overtime it can be costly.
