It is currently painted white (by the previous owners) but I want to convert it back to its original glory! Was thinking of giving it a lick of proper black flame retardent paint.

strip off the paint using normall stripper then use a product called patent blacking buy from old fashioned ironmongers its what has been used for many years

Lucky you. those things are nice. See if it is broken or cracked.
if you are going to try to use it becareful and make sur eit isn't cracked or will withstand heat after all of that time. Mke sur eyou have a good flue system(should be brick beiong tha told).
If you only wan tit for declaration you can buy metal painf for restoring it.
Those old stoves were molded for a one time shape and fit and not welded. Cast iron is hard to weld and does not take welding very well so I doubt you could find a replacement or get it welded safely for use but a machine shop can make parts for you butit is expensive.

strip it of with commercial paint stripper, sand it wine sand parer and make sure there is no rust left and then paint it with the proper black hearth paint, you can get it in DIY shops. If it has fine detail in it don't slap the paint on as you will ruin th detail

not sure about which paint to put on but really worthwhile stipping off all the layers of old paint you get so much more detail
