My oldest NEVER did this. She will literally EAT her board books or if she has a blanket with some fuzz she'll rip at it with her teeth until she yanks the fuzz off and eats it. She does the same with stuffed animals and clothing and she even tries to eat her shoe laces. I feed her a well balanced diet and she get very nutritious snacks whenever she wants them- why is she doing that? Is she lacking something? Or does she just like to rip at things with her teeth??

At this age babies are trying to explore everything. Especially since most are now walking or toddlinga and have gained access to everything above the knees that they could not reach from the floor. It is a tactile thing and they have not yet figured out 'smelling' things, so they use their sense of taste in addition to their hands.
"Will this feel the same in my mouth as it does in my hands?" Usually their answer is 'no', so they want to find out what every sensation, taste and how chewy things are. (Keep in mind baby is still learning how to use their chompers). Just put anything that is likely to pose a choking hazard safely out of reach and don't worry if she eats a few peices of fuzz or a page of a book little by little. She is learning.

I think that is normal because I can't get my 22 month old to quit chewing on his hard covered books. I have to take it away from him and make him spit out the paper in my hand. I too feed him plenty so I think it is just a kid thing. My daycare center told me it is totally normal.

Actually, check with your pediatrician, she may be lacking a vitamin. They say even in pregnant women, they may crave very odd things such as cardboard, laundry soap, even dirt! I really don't remember those cravings...lol, but it does happen.

my son does the same thing! (he's 13mo) he has been doing it and my thoughts are this: i think that with the book biting it is helping him maybe with teething. the blankets and ecetera i think it comes down to texture. they are curious little creatures and their mouth is great for exploration. i wouldn't worry much just watch for choking.

I'm sure she just likes ripping things with her teeth. Also, it might just feel good with those bigger teeth coming in - molars and eye-teeth can be nasty!

Kids that age like to mouth things. It's how they explore their world. Obviously, you have to keep small objects and toxic substances out of her reach.
