My 88 Mustang LX recently began shutting off in the middle of driving. Like, I'll be driving and my radio will start to cut out, then all of the sudden the car dies. If I put it in park or neutral, it starts right back up. My dad has looked at it and can't figure out what it might be - we've replaced the battery, the battery cables, water pump, etc. Any ideas?

Its not the Alternator or the battery otherwise it wouldnt start right back up use your heads people! The problem is electrical if the radio is cutting out then its before the ignition module have a mechanic or your dad start with the main ground straps and work through the main conections cleaning and tightening checking for loose and corroded wires untill you find it.

This is an alternator problem. The alternator is not keeping the battery charged and while driving is draining the battery. The radio or any electrical item i.e. lights, wipers would all not work properly. Parking the car always allows the car to start back up because it is not driving. Since this is an 88 has the alternator ever been replaced and if so when was the last time it was replaced?

Try your ignition control module. If you take it off and go to an auto parts store they should be able to test it, but you also might have to put it on a diagnostic machine for it could be a neutral safety switch or just a stupid little vaccuum hose or wiring.

Make sure the battery cables are tight, and check the ground wires on the engine. You may have bad wires at the ignition switch.

you either have a "dead short" somewhere, ignition module could be shot,or even a bad battery or alt. get hem both check while the car is running and then have them check under load....most auto parts stores will do this for you for free!!! good luck

You have a short in the wiring somewhere. start at the battery cables and work your way to the coil.
