Yes, definitely!!! I have a male that is very intelligent, but sometimes aloof. He will AT LEAST start whipping his tail if you say his name while he's napping. Since his name is Oreo, we've even seen him react when his name is just used in a sentence, referring to the cookie. I have a 5-year-old calico named Pumpkin. She is simply the sweetest, friendliest cat I've ever met. She's actually kind of needy. She will come running (actually waddling) from anywhere in the house if I call her name. My youngest kitty, Harley, isn't the brightest bulb in the pack, but has learned some key phrases, especially with the way that I say things. If I say, "get the bug" in an excited voice, she will come running and attack the mosquito or whatever has gotten inside the house. We never call her by her name, though. I've always just called her "little girl" (she's a tiny kitty even though she's 2 years old - her parents were siblings), and she answers to it.

Oh, and they ALL understand "NO!" :-)

Yes, both my cats come to thier name when called. My last cat who I had for 19 years, even knew a couple of commands, and would even sit when told.

Absolutely! My old 17 year old cat was smarter than most people I know! If she was sitting with her back to you and you started talking about her with someone else, the moment you said her name in the conversation she'd turn around and look at you like "What? What do you want now?" She also knew our names. If she wanted out and was harassing me in the kitchen, I'd say "Go talk to Dad" and she'd run to my father and start harassing him instead!

My current cat does - and what is more she will come towards me when I whistle her! I had another cat years ago which did the same. Most, though, simply ignore you, even if they recognise their name - or at least the sound patterns which make up their name. That's because they are cats!

Not only does my cat recognize his name but he also knows the words "chow chow" (our word for food) and he comes running from anywhere for both.

My daughter-in-law has four house cats and they all know their names. It's not just the tone of voice because they obviously know who you are talking to.

Yes they can just like dogs. I love cats. Adopt one in a shelter nearest you.

cats definitely know their names. Once you have one for a while they seem to know exaclty what you are talking about even when you tell them what to do. It's cute. They may even become protective of you
