I'd say thats a little early. I normally start around the age of 2. But there's nothing to stop you getting a potty and sitting him on it say once a day to get him used to it. Just don't get stressed if he has accidents. Good luck!

I am a mother of 3 boys and I was told when your child is ready he will start removing his diaper himself. Also, when he is at the age he is speaking pretty well, for example I have to poot or potty then you can introduce the potty training. As everyone mentioned it depends on your child. Although 16 months is early, he may have developed sooner than most 16 month old babies. My boys all were potty trained before they turned 2 but I taught nursery school when my boys were younger and I had 3 and 4 years old still in training pants and/or pampers. Good Luck with the training but please be patient and make it fun.

Hint with my oldest son we bought a potty chair for the heck of it and when his dad would shave, or shower Q would sit on his potty chair and try to go pee pee. When he did it we celebrated and it was fun for him.

Boys are much harder to potty train than girls, but if your ready to put a lot of work into potty training now you can do it. I found that the best way is just putting him into underwear and sitting him on the potty about every 30 minutes. If he goes clap and complement him and maybe even give him a treat to encourage him to keep it up. If he makes a mess on the floor or in his underwear show him that you have to clean it up maybe even have him help you a little. I was a nanny for four years and potty trained three boys in that time. Just make sure you put him on the potty every 30 minutes faithfully or else a lot of accidents will occur.

If he seems interested you can introduce him to the potty. No need to push him at this age though. If you try too hard to potty train him it can make him not want to go and therefore take longer to actually potty train him. Don't be in a hurry to have him grow up. They are only babies once. By about the age of three he should be pretty close to being potty trained if not before then. Good luck!

Girls usually potty train between 24-30 months. Boys usually potty train between 30-36 months.

If I were you, I'd wait. I think you'll be really frustrated trying to potty train a 16 month old.

personally i think 16 months is too young to start potty training put it is a good idea to start putting the idea in his head. Buy a potty and put it in your bathroom. Bring him in when mummy or daddy go and sit him down on it. Or stand if Daddy is going.
There are a few signs that will tell you if he is ready, If he complains about being wet or dirty, tells you when he wants his nappy changed. Its a tough time. My daughter is 26 months and is trained during day now. With many accidents in between. But we are getting there. Be supportive and never be cross when they have an accident. Good luck

I have a 21 month old son and he shows no sign of being ready for potty training. I'm planning (vaguely) to begin next summer when accidents in the garden won't cause either him or me any anxiety.

Don't rush - wait for him to acknowlegde what he's doing in his nappy - and get him a potty to sit on for "fun"

Girls tend to be ready before boys - don't worry that he's not keeping up - as long as he's a happy baby then he's a well adjusted baby and that's far more important than his being able to predict bowel movements!

My son is also 16 months old, and we went and bought him a potty after he followed his sister into the bathroom one day and tried climbing on the toilet. She got dad, and they took his diaper off and after a few minutes he peed in the toilet. Of course we made a huge deal out of it, and he was happy with that. The rest of the day, every 30 minutes or so he wanted into the bathroom. That was about 2 weeks ago, and since then he has successfully gone potty 4 times, we don't want to rush it, but if he is willing to try, why not. Good luck with what ever you choose to do.

i had my daughter potty trained at 1 1/2 yrs. old, but i hear boys are harder than girls. first i got a potty chair and put her on it a few times a day and i always brought her in the bathroom w/ me so she could see how it's done - after a few weeks i put her in panties and only diapers at night and just put her on the tiolet very often and always asked her if she had to go potty soon she was telling me and soon after that the night diapers were gone and still at five she has never had an accident. i was very lucky and every child is different so be patient and use a lot of encouragement - i've also heard that you can put cheerios in the tiolet and have a boy aim for them, but that could get messy! good luck!

Has he expressed an interest in using the potty? Does he follow you into the bathroom when you use the toilet? It wouldn't hurt to get him a potty but it may take him longer to be trained then if you started when he was older.
