i read an article about a study made by UCLA(not sure) researchers about yawn. one thing that was clear, there is no evidence that there is a lack of O2 in the brain that causes one to yawn. they classify yawn a primitive reflex such as jerking of the knee when hit on a right spot; however, they have not identify the cause of yawning. interestingly, they have associated yawning with ones sympathy towards other individual. this is why yawning is contagious. according to the study the kind-hearted individuals are easily "infected" by yawning than those that aren't. even chimps have responded the same as humans.

check this out...you want to see if that special someone is watching you?... yawn, and hope that she yawns back.

When someone is bored or tired, breathing slows down where less oxygen enters the lungs and carbon dioxide builds up in the blood, a message to the brain send signals to the lungs to take a deep breath, thus yawning is produced. This gets rid or carbon dioxide building up in the blood and increases oxygen supply particularly to the brain. So this theory implies yawning cleans the brain (and the systems) by getting rid of the waste carbon dioxide.

Such theory however was found tobe in controversy after research study has been done with results not supporting such theory thus suggesting yawning is just like stretching.

never heard that it can clean the brain. I think people yawn because when tired they start to breathe more slowly or weakly and then CO2 builds up in the lower lung regions and the yawn is a deep intake of air that expells the CO2 and thus allow more oxygen to enter the bloodstream and circulate to the brain

voila! happy again

Yawning is caused due to lack of Oxygen in the brain.....not neccessarily cleaning

No, I'm not sure how it would. It may be a start since it means that you are tired and that eventually leads to sleeping which is when the brain is most relaxed thus I guess cleaning the brain.

yawning provides a large amount of oxygen, so that might be it

Hi. It doesn't. It helps clear the co2 from your lungs and add more oxygen.
