Whales are large because the largest animals in the worlds history have been aquatic species of some kind, the biggest being in the era of the dinosaurs. This is purely because the environment of water itself allows for a greater mass to be sustained. No mammal of that equivilent size would be able to move, stand or survive on land as the force of gravity would put immense pressure on current mammalian skeletal structures.

Whales as stated in other answers need blubber to keep them warmin the cold depths of the oceans.

hahaha...whales are mammals, like us, but they live in the ocean. Water dissipates heat from the body. Whales have adapted to the cooler waters of the ocean by adding blubber as insulation. We use coats, and other warm clothing, and when in cold water, suits that help hold in heat so that we don't freeze to death. However if you lived in the water you would probably need blubber to survive, just like the whales.

Think of it like this, if we swam as much as whales do we'd be super skinny right? That's because our caloric intake would not fuel our bodies to swim as much. Whales however, are eating small shrimp 24/7, which provides excess energy than needed, thus huge bodies.

Make sense?

Perhaps there's a gap in the market here - low-calorie plankton. It could be marketed thusly:
'One too many Jonahs recently? Can't outrun Ahab any more?In need of a whalebone corset? Then try new Plantonlite - the delicious new low fat snack. Ideal with a kelp salad.'

Whales need blubber (fat) around their bodies to protect them from the cold.

Do you have any idea how cold the ocean is? They need blubber on them to keep them warm in the artic waters. Besides, they are just larger animals than us in general.
