If you cannot be a moral person and still keep your religious beliefs then, forgive me for saying so but, there must be something badly wrong with your religion. The fact that you are even asking this question leads me to suspect that you already know deep down that this is true. Do you believe that an IMMORAL person who stays true to their faith will find favour with God? That is a dangerous path to tread, we read about such fanatics everyday! Look inside yourself and if something FEELS wrong then it probably is, but if you've only been told that it's wrong, well then, that may not be the case. It could be you need to choose one path or another where before, you've been walking between the two. I hope you find your way my friend and travel your chosen pathways(because there can be more than one) in happiness!

Your understanding of morals does not come from your religion? If they does not come from your training, then where does your moral understanding come from?
One's moral beliefs come, I feel, straight from the source. "All know the way already, but few will walk it" as Jesus says. If your religion is contradicting your morals, then you don't really believe that it is best.. where do the contradictions come in? There may simply be something wrong with your understanding of religious texts or something.. if you're having that problem, then I say go with your heart, with what you really KNOW to be true, over someone else's interpretation of text any day.

Don't not your religious beliefs coincide with being moral also? A heart changed by the love and forgiveness of the Lord Jesus Christ would undoubtedly solve this dilemma, because religion would be out of the window and replaced by a desire, and the strength to live right through, the power of God's Spirit. Hope this helps. God bless.

Morals and religion do not go hand in hand. You can be atheist and still be a very moral person and you can be a Christian and have no morals whatsoever. Just ask congressman Foley. He attended Church every week, The milkman that shot up the Amish school was a avid church goer as well. Ask them I am sure they will give you what you are looking for.

Getting a personal relationship with the God of your Understanding hhelped me. I didn't dismiss the belief I was raised up with, but they seemed to be inefficient for me in living in this HELL on EARTH world.
I have a personal life lie with God who tells me I am O.K. doing what I am doing at any given time weather Good or Bad. Because it is not what I walk through on earth but how I walk through it becaouse on my own power I can't do any thing alone I have to have that God Of My Understanding in all that I do,He Get's The Creditof things I am able to go through on earth ........Especially like keeping a religious belief or be a moral person.

Religious beliefs can espouse death and destruction, depends what part of the bible book you read (their will be a paragraph to suit the justification of any action, good or bad - its a very craftily formatted book !).
I'd ignore the belief and go with being a moral person everytime. You wouldnt want to be like Oliver Cromwell and give the 'glory' of all his battles and deaths to 'god'.

Maybe you should research your religion (and how to spell religion!) a bit better. Find out what the morals and ethics are according to it, and live by that. Best of both worlds. Hopefully your religion has good human ethics!!

Most religions steer you toward the morals espoused by the writings or god of that particular religion. If you're finding morals outside of that, you're most likely making them up yourself or copying those of your society.
As a Christian, there are really no true morals for me outside of those set up by God. Therefore my morals come from my religion.

Tenaciously adhering to religious cannon is much inferior to doing your moral best.
Reference Matthew 23 where Jesus paints a perfect picture of those who strictly adhere to religious dogma. Compare that to Jesus teaching in Luke 10.
Story of the Good Samaritan
30Jesus replied with an illustration: "A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes and money, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.
31"By chance a Jewish priest came along; but when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32A Temple assistant[d] walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.
33"Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt deep pity. 34Kneeling beside him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with medicine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35The next day he handed the innkeeper two pieces of silver[e] and told him to take care of the man. `If his bill runs higher than that,' he said, `I'll pay the difference the next time I am here.'
36"Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?" Jesus asked.
37The man replied, "The one who showed him mercy."
Then Jesus said, "Yes, now go and do the same."

If your Religious beliefs are not in line with morality, something is out of whack.
I am a Catholic, and whenever I break my morals, I am also breaking my Religious beliefs.
Peace and God Bless you!
