In that question, LUCKY U made a very good point. Religion doesn't come up much in everyday life for most people. If it does, do you act the same way to your friends or strangers you may have just met? Or is it the factor of anonymity that causes some people to be so brash about their opinions?
If so, does it make you think twice about the hidden thoughts of your friends? Maybe they're in R+S too, saying the exact opposite of what you say. *shrugs*
This borderlines with the question SPOOKY just asked. I just realized that after typing this whole thing out.

The whole topic of Religion is such a hot button issue Will, many people are afraid to express their own beliefs. Just the fact that someone might not believe in a God can greatly offend someone else, so they keep their beliefs to themselves.

I do think that a lot of people hide their real religious feelings for the sake of their social environment. I know I did for a long time. And I still would probaby act differently around someone I just met. I can talk to my boyfriend and a few of my friends about how I really feel, but in the most part - it is a hidden treasure. Even after researching religion and coming to my own conclusion, I still feel opted to "believe in God", and go to church. Its really a social thing.

Unfortuantely, it doesnt. I wish it would.
Sometimes, I go home and talk to my sig other about what I got up to today on Y!A. Her, like many others, just seems stuck in her opinion that God doesnt exist (Im an atheist as well.) But we rarely have any intelligent discussion about it...
I wish there was more people to engage in discussions with. But alas, I think you nailed it when you state that most people find the protection of anonimity on this site as a great place to spew hate and intolerance....

Well sure, on the worst of days my husband and I at least pray together, and it's brought up on that level.
Um, in real-life I'm usually a don't often talk about it with strangers or acquaintances unless I'm directly asked. I see a question as an invitation to be open about it...it's just that on YA there's always direct questions.

The world is in such a mess, religion should come up in daily life.
But doesn't it seem that those who are suposed to be the most religious are the most violent.
Wether Muslims or Christians they are both sending people out to kill each other. They are both wanting nuclear weapons to destroy all mankind that doesn't agree with them.

It does for me, but the people I hang out with are interested in religion, too. Several of them have also walked away from conservative Christian, Jewish, or Muslim groups. (I'm a walkaway from the Assemblies of God.) I don't consider someone a friend if they are vehemently against my belief or say that there's only one right way to do anything.

I discuss spiritual matters with my family. I just discussed the spirituality of vegetarianism with my daughter about an hour ago. We are a family who enjoys ideas. With strangers I am aloof. Don't want to offend and there are many many Christians in my area.

Spirituality comes up daily in my life.
Religion only comes up around religious people.
Spirituality, my views of it and the implementation of those views in my life is a very large part what defines me as a person.

For me it comes up a lot! If you followed me through my day and knew what was going on in my mind you'd probably consider me a fanatic nutcase. I have many many small rituals I conduct through out the day and I spend a lot of time communicating with my Goddesses/Gods.
Come to think of it I may be a fanatic nutcase. ;-)
I also try to help people deepen their spiritual lives (spiritual director).

Southpaw, I can honestly say that religion was last discussed in my house about 5 years ago, with the exception of questions my kids ask.
Religious debates just don't ever happen.
