Oh god yes the same thing happened to my Grandma except she did not get married again for fear of going to hell - I think religious doctrine is used to control women (have you noticed that theme through all the religions of the world? ) I think hell is probably full up without needing to add our Grannies to it. More seriously though the bible does not support the religious doctrines or catechisms or peoples opinions, there is no such thing stated in the bible that individuals will live forever in torment for minor transgressions

I am a christian and here is what I believe the bible is saying about your subject.....
Adultry is the ONLY reason God has put in the bible to dissolve a marriage.
Matthew 5:32 says" But I say that a man(or woman) who divorces his wife(husband), UNLESS she(he) has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultrey.
matthew 19:9 says"And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery-UNLESS his wife has been unfaithful.
There are more scriptures talking about divorce, but it is clear that divorce is accepted only if adultrey is involved. Because the marriage covenant is broken in divorce, and they are no longer bound to each other, they are free to marry someone else.
I have a story that is close to yours. my grandma had three young kids and her husband cheated on her and then left to live with the other women. my grandma did eventually divorce him but she went along with the "old thinking" and thought she could never marry again. She remained single until she died.
that's just my opinion. alot of older people think that they can't remarry. no where in the bible does it say someone will go to hell if they divorce and remarry. sounds like the stuff catholics believe.

Your grandmother had every right to re-marry as Jesus himself said that adultery was reason for divorcing a marriage. Her former husband however is not only an adulter... but made the woman he married and adultress also. I will be keeping him in prayer that he comes to realize this and seeks Gods forgivness for what he has done not only to your grandmother but to the woman he is with now.
Adultery is not an unforgiveable sin.

You did not say what religion she was married in. There was only one religion with the valid Sacrament of Marriage in those days. If she was a Catholic and was married in the Catholic Church then it could be a problem if she remarried without going through the proper chanels. To just blow off your religion for a man is putting someone else over God.

In both cases both women are justified in divorcing their husbands. As both of their husbands were unfaithful. Beating his spouse makes him unfaithful and unfit to be a husband. Leaving his wife for another women makes him unfaithful.
Neither wife will go to hell for being left by or leaving their husbands.

No she isn't going to "hell" as society seems to use the term. Her husband chose to be mean, which goes contrary to the will of God and used his agency to choose his path. Your Grandmother did the same and used her agency to marry someone who would treat her as she should be treated. Do not worry about what others say. If their beliefs restrict or take away the agency of another then they are contrary to the Plan of Salvation that was created before the world was. A wonderful gift we received from God is our agency; the freedom to choose for ourselves. Adam & Eve were given their agency in the garden of Eden when they were told of every tree thou mayest freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat for in the day thou eat thereof thou shalt surely die, but thou mayest choose for thyself for it is given thee but remember I forbid it.

If your Grandma has or will repent of her sins and trust Christ alone she will not go to Hell.
