I had a severe kidney infection last year and i almost died from it. Ive been taking hydrocodine for like a week. I take 1 at night before bed, thats when i need it the most. I posted a question lastnight regarding some pain i was having on my right side right under my rib. It's like a burning feeling and i also feel some pressure. Like something wants to burst. It was also affecting my hip bone. It felt really sore to the touch. It was all VERY painful and i would like to know if that could possibly be my kidney!! It's really worrying me!! I want to know if my pain killer could be bad for all this or WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!? And how long can you be on a pain killer?? My doctor says take it as needed. But how long is too much?

Hydrocodone is processed through the liver, not through the kidneys. Also generally speaking kidney pain is more toward the back, what they call "flank pain," like on your side but more toward the back of your body.

I've had a similar pain but not as bad, it sounds like. It was nothing, just a muscle cramp.

You should definitely let your doctor know about this pain, as soon as possible. If he/she is unconcerned or you can't contact him/her, then call any pharmacist and talk to them about it.

Long term use of hydrocodone (over a couple months, I'd say) can be bad for the liver and also can cause you to become addicted to it, where you need more and more of it to treat your pain, and that can cause real problems.

Maybe a second opinion from a different doc would help too.

I am NOT a doctor, this is just from my own experiences and study that I have done.

Good luck!!

Almost all pain killers I know say in the instructions that they shouldn't be taken by patients with serious kidney or liver failure. Of course, they may say it as a precaution, because they don't want to be blamed for anything. You should go to the hospital immediately, if you have this pain and you have a history of a serious kidney problem. Even if it turns out to be nothing, you can't risk it. It could be something irrelevant, but still dangerous unless treated immediately! Like apendicitis, etc.

I've been on hydrdocodone for over 3 years now and no kidney problems.. I do have liver function test done every 6 months just to keep a check on things. You should go see a different doctor, something is not well with you. I highly doubt that its the painkiller though.

Ive taken hydrocodone 10-50mg a day every day for the past 2 years. My kidneys are fine I get a liver and kidney function test twice a year. But if you are concearned you can call your Dr. or pharmacist they are there to help you and answer any and ALL questions.
If you are taking Vicodin or Nocro that has acetominophen and that is processed through your liver.
Drink plenty of water with your pill and throughout the day..... you should be fine. Just remember to bring this up with your Dr at the next visit.

sounds like you need to go to a differnt doctor and quickly. Perhaps the emergency room. Stay away from doctors who only wants you to stay on pain meds instead of find the problem. They make money off you that way. some are just greedy like that. SERIOUSLY, you NEED to go to a different DR TODAY! You never mess with somethng that is as painful as what you are saying. Could be kidneys or appenix or something else in there, I have no clue about anatomy

I don't think it is from your pain medicine, a severe kidney infection doesn't cause that reaction., You need to go back to Doctor. There is something else other then the kidney that is making you fell the way you do. Get to your Doctor today don't ask people your Doctor will give you a examination, go today.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Yikes! I don't know if it affects the kidneys, it might. I've been on it for a couple of years after 2 back surgeries.

Ask your doctor! If you are in great pain, it could be your gallbladder, or your appendix. Those can cause pain in the upper right part of your abdomen. Only a doctor can diagnose your pain. People on here can't!

Go to the ER, or your doctor.

Your doctor can run a test that can tell if you have any kidney problems.
