religious leaders hundreds of years ago formulated religious doctrine to control the people and gather riches. It has turned against us because we are no longer the unwashed masses - we can read and everything now! It was easy to control the population when they could not read and lived in fear of the Inquisition or being exiled by their community. It is still true today though because people live in fear of going to hell and lets be honest the Vatican and the Pope arent exactly slouches in the financial market!
