RWD cars generally do not perform as well in poor weather conditions because of weight distribution issues. For most cars, the majority of the weight is on the front wheels, so the rear wheels may lose their traction more easily in wet or snowy conditions. Many sports-oriented cars have RWD, however, because of the handling characteristics. RWD cars tend to be more maneuverable at high speed. Also, under hard acceleration, they maintain traction better because the cars weight shifts to the rear wheels.Trucks also tend to have RWD because when they are loaded or towing a trailor, substantial weight will be on the rear wheels. Just think about a car's static and dynamic weight distribution and it will all make sense.
I think most cars today have FWD because the design is more compact and a bit simpler and cheaper. Also, there may be less parasitic loss of hp because the conversion of power from the engine to the wheels is more direct.

RWD vehicles operate with a drive shaft hooked up to a diferential on the rear axle.
until the 80's there were very few Front wheel drive vehicles, and everything was just fine.
I own 3 vehicles, and 2 of the 3 are rear wheel drive. Living in Manitoba, Canada, where we get lots of snow, I have no problem getting around. Further, maintenance and repairs are much cheaper than FWD, with CV joints and boots etc.

Believe it or not there was once a time when there was only rear wheel drive.
With good snow tires or studs RWD do OK in snow.
Real high performance cars are mostly RWD. Corvettes, BMW, Mercedes,Jags.Porsche..Newer Porsches are AWD
The old VW beetles were RWD and super cars in snow.
No, You do not need to change the differential fluid every two years, Thats a Jiffy lube gimmick.

I don't recommend RWD if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow. Other than that there is nothing wrong with a RWD vehicle.

Rear wheel drive vehicles work with a differential which if it is not sealed you should have the differential fluid replaced every 2 years to prevent the gears from failing.
