Really just saying "I want to see if anyone else will screw me but I'm leaving the door open in case I get hard-up and need a booty call." He/she wants to do others but, just in case he/she has trouble getting laid, he/she wants to be able to call you.

Please allow me to translate, in my opinion, the meaning of: "We just need a break".... It means: "This isn't working. I don't care about you like I once did and I want the opportunity to meet someone else. BUT I am slightly unsure of just how much I want this to end, so I would like to keep the potential of a future relationship between the two of us on the side, just in case I start to feel lonely." Hmm.. that sounds slightly insensitive. But let's face it, successful relationships do not require breaks. Best of luck to you though!

I would say; wanting a break from your relationship, would pretty much mean to end it! Wanting a break only in real terms; means, he/she wants time to explore his/her options and to see if you are truly what they want in a relationship! If a person agrees to this, they are saying it's okay for you to mess around and then come crawling back if you don't like whatever it was you found!
