I know that it happens when entering the military academies - is it true for enlisted soldiers and ROTC, too?

They now take pictures of your tatoos and will ask you what they mean. Basically thay dont like racist / offensive tats. I just came back into the Marine Corps and had to tell them that my Yankees tat wasnt a gang symbol. Also they didnt do this when I first went in in 95.

I've never heard of that practice outside the SOF/EOD world. They need the info to ID bodies. Regular military not so much.

If you have something that is potential offensive, I suggest you talk to a recruiter. They many or may not have you get it removed. The military will pay for the removal if it becomes an issue later in your career. (Only applys to tattoos prior to entry.)

It depends. They do document all tattoos, to make sure they are not gang-related or racist. In the case of photographing them, they do that when they have to do a waiver because of content OR their location. Tattoos on the neck and those that can be seen past the wrist cuff of a shirt have to be waviered. Ask your local recruiter for more details

EVERYONE is photographed when entering the military, and you have to have a photo ID when being processed at MEPS. So, if you don't like to have your picture taken, I guess you won't be joining the military!

Yes it's the norm these tats can be used to ID your body later if you get picked off and can't be Ided any other way of course now they can ID you through DNA tests but why pay for an expensive tests if your tats do the job.

No one is going to take pics of your Tattoos. Some doctor may look at them and offer a brief written description but tats are all good as long as they are no offensive to anyone.

EVERYBODY who enters the military is photographed.
It goes on their ID's. Officers, enlisted, tattoed, non-tattooed.

It all depends on your recruiter and where in the quota he is standing. It also depends on where your tattoo is at. The regulations concerning tattoos has loosened up a little to allow more people to join.

I didn't have any pictures taken, but they are documented. Before going to DI or recruiting duty tattoos have to reviewed.
