turn it on to the temp. you want and if you want to be sure it's preheated to the heat, buy one of those oven thermometers and stick it in there, you will then know for sure when it's ready to bake for you. I use a gas oven and turn it on to preheat, but once it gets warm it's good enough for me.

If you are concerned about when the oven is finished pre-heating, there is a type of thermometer that you can puchase to keep in your oven. I used to have an oven that had inaccurate temperature settings. It is a thermometer specifically designed for use in the oven. It is roundish and has a "hook" at the top for hanging on the rack. You can find it at any home store like Bed Bath & Beyond. BB&B sells it for $12.

If your oven has electrical ignition, just push or turn the igniter switch. There is usually a peep hole to check if there's flame on your burner rings inside. Ovens with pilot lights just need you to set the flame level to the required amount.
:SAFETY FIRST: If you smell the stink of gas and there's no flame, close the main valve and open all your windows. Contact qualified repair personnel if igniter is broken.

Turn it on to your desired temperature. Generally gas ovens preheat much faster than electric ovens so I would suggest you wait two - five minutes and throw your food in as normal.

Hopefully it isn't the 'ol "light the pilot light" type. If not, use it as you would any electric stove. If not, locate where the pilot light is and with a very long matchstick or one of the long scripto lighters, light the pilot light and then turn the oven to the temp you want. If you are in ANY way confused, call the gas company. They will know how to help you.

It takes about 5 minutes to pre-heat it. That's why a lot of older receipes start off by telling you to turn on the oven.

I personally would give it about 20 minutes to preheat just in case. Go into the kitchen and turn on the oven and set the temp. Than go about preparing whatever food you are going to cook.

You know it is done preheating when the thermometer you SHOULD have in ALL ovens reads the temp you set it at.
I usually give about 15 minutes.

you have to find the igniter in the oven and use a lighter or a match to light it up. be careful it is gas. check with the owners manual. it should tell you. or check onoline for a particular type of oven you have.

In a good gas stove, it will preheat in about 5 minutes.
Older stoves had no light, you had to use common sense.
