David's Bridal is a nice option for those on a budget (less expensive than many of the other "chain stores" and "boutiques"). However there are MANY options available for nice dresses, most important though is your budget... without knowing your budget I am unable to give you specific advice.
Here's what I can give though:
Lower Budget ($0 - $300):
Want ads, Garage sales, David's Bridal
HIGHLY RECOMMEND - calling/meeting a wedding dress seamstress, many times you can get the dress of your dreams made to order for less than the cost of a "form" dress. If they cant make a dress for the price you want, then use their measurements (they should take your measurements for free) and use those to get a gown anywhere you like.... even from internet or by mail order - but make sure you do not put a deposit (get it outright), and that you use a credit card so that you can dispute charges if necessary, and be sure there is a return policy you can live with before doing Internet or mail order.
I recently had a bride that got a GORGEOUS dress from an Internet site for $99 + shipping.
Mid-Range Budget ($300 - $700):
David's Bridal, Other Bridal Boutiques
High Budget ($700 - up):
Bridal Boutiques, Direct order from designers, etc
Good Dresses do not have to cost an arm and a leg. Good Luck

Look into getting one in the classifieds or online. I promise you, if you wear a dress that one other bride wore before you but you paid one tenth of the price for, it will be worth it.
You will be able to get a gorgeous, designer gown at a huge discount. Even if you bought your dress new, 50 people have probably tried it on.
Use the extra money you would have spent on the dress and go on a fantastic honeymoon.

I got mine at David's for 50%!
Just look around and try a couple store. Don't use the internet or buy off of websites.... I know someone who lost a lot of money that way... the store disappeared and she lost her deposit.
You can try ebay- but you have to worry about sizes (cause all dresses are different) and stay away from overseas vendors- they make cheap knock offs.
