I want to go to a university..but im limited on money..just like everyone else. Unlike some others i cant get any money from the government because my parents make too much money. However i havent lived wiht my parents for about six months...and they dont pay anything for me..i dont ask money from them..basically im 18 and independent. is there a way i can get them to look at my income and not theirs? If so please guide me in the steps

also since im only 18 ..is it possible for me to get a loan without a co-signer? It would be quite impossible for my parents to cosign for me.

There are non financial need based scholarships out there. They can be located at your university's financial aid office's website and on free membership scholarship search websites. Most are updated on a regular basis. It is important to pay attention to the organization's and company's website for details and ideas for the essay. Another is important to pay attention to the application deadline. Never overlook the small scholarship award amounts. Good luck!

Are you turning 19 or did you just turn 18? Because the age thing can make a big difference to what follows but there's a way you can try it.

If you want to start school in a year or two it will work out best. Most schools deadlines for Fall 2007 are around Jan-Feb 2007. Your FAFSA application for the 2007-2008 academic year will be based on your 2006 income tax. Your parents can't claim you as a dependent this year, your taxes must be filed seperately and you need to have proof of income for 2006. If you made somewhere below $25,000 you're in an excellent position but something like $15,000 living at home paying no rent makes you a dependent. It doesn't matter if you get your own food and clothes. If your parents claim you then your aid will be based on their income.

The other option in the meanwhile (FAFSA applications start in Jan) is to look for private scholarships usually based on grades and merit.. Those are due by February for the most part. Also put some state schools on your list. They're the cheapest.

Good luck.

You will need your parents tax information in order to apply for federal aid (ie, loans, grants). So, if your family's EFC is high then you more likely be eligible for on unsubsidized loan and since you may be a freshman then you will be able to take out 2625. Of course, if you are activity in your community and have good grades, you can get a scholarships. you can also join organization at your college that give stipends for students services. there are programs that allow student to take out additional loans without co-signer. try websites like students.gov or even your college's financial aid website. you will be amaze of how much information they have for student, especially easy scholarships to claim. Well, good luck!

Try searching the web for scholarships. There are many search engines that will find scholarships that you can apply for. One of my favorites is FastWeb. I would NOT suggest getting a loan.
