I'm looking for a young yorkie or shih tzu or a mix between the two that needs to be rescued or just needs a loving home.

Hello!!! I am glad to see that you are willing to consider adopting a rescue doggie!!! I hope that you can find what you are looking for!
You might watch Craigslist (www.Craigslist.org) in your area for ads listing free doggies.
You might check the Classified ads in your local newspaper.
Your local animal shelter / SPCA will have dogs available... but as far as I know there is always some sort of adoption fee. However, the fee is usually a pretty good deal since it covers shots, microchipping and spaying/neutering.
www.Petfinder.com is another way to hook up with local rescues and SPCAs, and you can search by dog breed ... but there is usually an adoption fee of some sort. Once again, it is usually a pretty good deal. You might contact the rescue groups and see if you can put in some volunteer hours in exchange for a reduced or waived adoption fee... that way you and the dog both win!
Finally, let your friends and family know what you are looking for, and ask them to keep their eyes open for you!!!

if you cannot afford an adoption fee, you cannot afford to properly care for a dog. You MUST know that little purebred or first cross dogs are valuable so I doubt a breeder would go to the trouble of breeding a litter, only to give the pups away for nothing.

Check your classified ads. lots of people are giving away pets to good homes. YAhoo also has a yahoo pets section where you can check adoption pages (some are free to good home ads there too)
