Yes, it's a phase she's going through. As long as you don't notice drastic mood changes, depression, drug use or problems with the police or other authority leave her be. Marilyn Manson or KMFDM didn't cause Columbine or any other High school shootings. There was much more in play than a way of dressing to express ones self. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were well on there way to killing someone long before they got into goth or industrial or any other genre of music. Keep track of her friends and keep open lines of communication and your daughter will be fine.

i say at 14 she is not the best person to make choices for her self, i say that if her studies are not in danger or she is still acting like herself and she is showing signs of maturity and it has not affected her as a person then give it a try . but on the other hand if she has an attitude and is not talking and keeps secrets and hangs out with people you don't think are right then yes put your foot down and be the parent and let her know that when she is 18 and wants to look like that then it will be fine but if not, and until then it's your way or noway you are the parent and the one with the money and you buy the clothes so there should really not be a discussion on clothes bottom line you hold the cash spend it how you see fit lol

I'm a Mom too, but my kids are younger (oldest is 6 - no teens yet!), and I think kids can be allowed to express their individuality as long as they aren't hurting themselves or anyone else. The way a kid looks CAN have something to do with their mindset or attitude, but doesn't always. If she's a good kid and you have a good relationship with her, I would allow her to express herself in this way, and just downplay it - don't mention it or draw a lot of attention to it.
If, however, the goth dressing is happening with other changes, like depression, self-injury (ex. cutting), or drugs, then you must deal with those issues - not the way she dresses itself, but the issues that are underlying the change in her appearance.
Good luck!

Yes! A young woman her age is just trying to find her place in the world, the goth thing will change to something new in time. There is nothing wrong with the goth look but I think it's getting a bit old and outdated.

i dont think so no..and people who say she will anyways..at 14 that is not possible..a 14 year old does not have a source of income...you buy her clothes and if she wont wear what you buy then i guess that she will go naked!!!
if your daughter was wearing black to express how she feels inside like the one guy said then you need to talk to her and see why she is doing so because black is a very sad depressing color.

Yes, she will grow out of it. I went through it and it didnt mean I was suicidal or doing drugs. I just wanted to fit in with my friends. My mom was okay with it as long as I didnt go to far with it......like dye my hair black or peirce anything. So, let her express herself and just make sure there are a few rules about what is okay and not okay. After all, she is 14.

teenagers like to dress the way they want to..we may not understand it but it is their own way of expressing themselves. Remember when you were a teenager? How many times did your parents think you were strange for putting an outfit together that they didn' t really like?

After reading some of the answers here, please dont take all of them seriously... she is trying to find an indentity to fit in, dont encourage it, but make sure she does not go to the extreme. Gothic is not the best choice, teach her what it really means. Search the internet in the search of Gothic history and have her to be with you.

What does it matter, to an extent, what she wears on the outside. Its whats inside that really counts, and if wearing black makes her happy, GOOD FOR HER!

she is only expressing herself which is healthy enough, but if her grades start to fall and you notice a difference in her behavior, i would seek out ways to get her interested in something different. some of the kids eventually go on to different styles, while other let it consume them into trouble.
