I was a teacher and made $33,444 per year with decent benefits. Everyone thinks teaching is the easiest career because we only work 9 months of the year (10 months now). This is far from true. Teachers that are worth anything no spend close to 10 hours per day either at school or at school events/extra duties. Most also spend a good portion of their home time working on lesson plans, tests, grading, getting more education at our own expense, and other things. If I sat down and plotted out how much time i spent working as a teacher it probably came to close to 70 hours per week not including the time i put in on sunday afternoon getting ready for the coming week. That was the aspect of teaching I hated and that is the spect of teaching we can thank NCLB and its blind policies for.

Currently I am seeking employment in the higher education field as I work on fininishing my PhD in Educational Policy Studies. I have not been making much money at all but I really do enjoy what I am doing with research and classes. I also spend the daytime hours watching over my 2 year old which has been a TRUE JOY that has been paid by watching her get smarter, learn new things, and being able to giggle with her too :) highly enjoyable.

Go into a profession because you ENJOY it not because you can make good money....

I am a small engine technician, I love that type of work. I make about $38,000 a year. Before this, I was a service manager at a garage, 15 years ago, I was making good money for that time period. Making around $28,000 a year. I also liked that line of work, but there is lots to keep up with when dealing with cars now. But, like the teacher said, like what you want to do for a career. Don't go into something just for the money. You may hate doing that work until you retire. Good luck.
