We were practical. We had wine specially made for each girl, with labels with their names and a message with our wedding date. Then had wine glasses, charms, tea lights, and some other stuff that went along with the theme.
For the guys, we gave them each coolers with steaks and beer. It went over very well.
We figured we never use or even look at the items we have received from being in other's weddings, so why add to people's collections.

I am trying to think of something specific to each bridesmaid. For example, one bridesmaid loves a particular wine that is a bit out of her budget for everyday enjoyment so I will get her a bottle of that wine along with a gift certificate to a store she likes or something like that. Another bridesmaid loves to sew and such, so I plan to get her a gift certificate to a fabric supply store. I want to do something that is both personal and useful. I love the tiara idea too but it's really only something they will wear once.
Try to personalize it. You don't have to buy the same thing for everyone.
Another "universal" idea is to get a coach or dooney wristlet. They are about $50 and you can get one that might coordinate with the dresses. They are useful long after the wedding and something a lot of us girls won't buy for ourselves as we see them as somewhat frivilous.
Sorry to say, but I'm at a loss for the guys! That'll be my fiance's dept!

Most of your attendants are going to appreciate a gift that lightens the load on their pockets. Weddings are alot more expensive on people's pocketbooks (OTHER than just the happy couple) but people often forget that as they get wrapped up in the couple's big day.
The jewelry for the bridesmaids, or sashes if you are having them wear them, pay for a "girls spa day" and go get your nails done, or pay foir their hairdo for day of, etc.
For the guys you could give them a gift certificate for the tux rental shop or pay for their shoes, ties, cufflinks, etc.

We are getting the guy's leathermen- Target
For the girls- I got them Tiara from ebay.
And I am making them jewelry- 14K gold with AB crystals.
We are spending about $50-60 per person.
Look on Amazon and different places for gift ideas. The "bridal" ideas are not very nice or personal. You can get them all different things too...
My last wedding I was in she did spa buckets- they were great, she filled them with ton of different lotions, soaps, candys, eye patches, shaving stuff- you named it, she gave it to us. I think her baskets cost about $100 per person though.
Then another wedding I was in she just have us Robes that were embroidered- they were OK, I am not a robe person... mines in a box somewhere...
One wedding I was in- that I would say was a NO NO, she just gave us random crap she bought when she was in Africa. It was really impersonal and just very random tourist junk.

You can purchase their jewelry for the wedding for them. Depending on how expensive or how much you want to spend. I did that and the girls were grateful. My kids received photo albums to fill with pictures from their special day in my in laws wedding. Also a nice picture of them if couples from your photographer. Or with you. I have one of a friend and and my son, I love and he will always have it.

A Neddle with a piece of thread hanging from it.
With a decorated note saying :You are sewing a seed and this seed must be nurtured.
Leave them with that. It's something worth thinking about.
