It is like popping your fingers but my jaw pops when moved to the side. It gets easier and easier to pop everytime and I'm worried there may be consequences.

it can lead to TMJ. I have it and it cause a bone spur where the jaw bone rubs the skull. it also made the muscles imbalanced where one side is dominent and stiff. when I had finals I was really stressed and grinding my teeth in my sleep. The muscles got so tense I couldn't open my mouth or chew any food. I see a chiropractor for TMJ but the treatment hurts like hell.

My jaw does the same thing. I work in a dental office so I had one of my doctors look at it. He told me it could be the beginning of TMJ. Sometimes your jaw pops, and sometimes people have pain in their jaw as well. I would try not to pop it purposely, ususally TMJ is not curable, and its just something you will have to live and deal with. But you definitely don't want to make it to where you get pain (which sometimes get pain) and its not fun! Some people have to do physical therapy if it gets bad as well. So be careful! Sometimes it can also be caused if you clench or grind your teeth at night. Look into getting a bite splint for bed if you think you have this problem. Good luck!

Cut that out! You are stretching the joint capsule and causing damage to your TMJ.

If you've had the popping for over 6 months, it may not be possible to get it to go away completely, but conservative treatment may be able to eliminate any pain that you experience. (Although you didn't mention pain, so hopefully, there is none.) By "conservative," I mean simple bite adjustment, an appliance (like a night guard or other), medication, physical therapy, or some combination of all four.

First it can become a bad habbit and you'll do it without thinking about it. Next, you will ware down the joint or even chip the bone.
(This will cause pain or you will hear what sounds like sandpaper when you move your jaw.)
Also, you can end up with a mis-alined jaw if your not careful.
Chronic jaw pain is very hard to live with, so please, just avoid popping your jaw all together.

if it's popping more and more often it's probably not from you popping it, but rather from tmj which might be getting better or worse. stop chewing gum and cut down on your caffeine and no chewy candies for a while.. see if that helps

if you keep doing it, it will become easier to dislocate it...this can cause arthritis in the hinge joint of your jaw and is very painful, i have it in my hip for the same reason, it pops out of its socket easily...resist it if you can!
