I hadn't heard anything about a bag with a purpe rock in it. I believe what was supposed to have happened was, an angel descended from heaven and showed the founder of the church (Joseph Smith? I'm terrible with names) a place where he (Smith) dug up a series of golden plates with inscriptions on them. He made copies of the inscriptions, which became the Book of Mormon. Of course, once Smith was done, the angel took the plates back -- leaving no direct evidence for ANYthing Smith claimed....

First of all, you do not need to apologize for misspelling mormons. It is ok. I too have never heard of a purple rock and bag. There is a lot of misinformation, and flat out lies about mormons floating around on the internet...take no heed to them. Ask an actual mormon if you have any questions. Like was referred to above, the best place is www.mormon.org. We believe it to be the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Many precious things that were lost through near 1700 to 1800 years of apostasy were restored, beginning with Heavenly Father's, and Jesus Christ's personal appearance to Joseph Smith. We revere Joseph Smith as a prophet, and definitely not deity.

I'm a Mormon but I can honestly say that I've never heard about a guy with a bag and a purple rock. Weird story. It doesn't make sense to me either.

There are all kinds of strange stories going around. You can go to www.lds.org to learn more. Most people say "Joseph Smith started it." However, I would say Jesus Christ Himself restored the fulness of the Gospel, because "many plain and precious parts of the Gospel" had been removed from the Bible over the centuries, and there was a loss of apostolic authority and Priesthood power. I believe that Peter, James, and John - three of Jesus Christ's true disciples - returned to restore the power of the Priesthood authority in conjunction with the restoration of the essentials of the Church as originally established by Jesus Christ during His mortal ministry.
