Is the child under 2 at time of travel? Airlines will verify this a lot of times with the birth certificate.

There are very few airlines that offer discounted child rates. Even if an airline does it is always destination specific. I have only seen 2 child airline fares in 8 years, so I wouldn't count on this.

The reason for an airline to charge a full adult ticket for a child is child or not they are still taking up a seat same as an adult would.

You are going to need to expect to pay the exact same for children, sorry I'm sure this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but I have been doing this a long time and this is the way it always turns.

The 2 year old may be able to fly for free - but he would have to sit on someone's lap the entire flight. The 3 year old will need to buy a seat - fare is the same regardless of whether it is a child or adult. It will be the same fare as for an adult, so based on your calculations it will be $600.

It depends on the airline. Most airlines will allow children under 2 to fly free, as long as they sit on a parent's lap (that is, they are free as long as they don't have their own seat). There would probably be a discounted rate of some sort for the 3 year old, but again, it would depend on the airline. The ticket would probably be somewhere between $600-1000, but you'd have to check with your travel agent or with the airline.

The two year old may be able to still fly free, but expect to pay the same as an adult for the 3 year old.

As I understand it, most airlines allow a child age two and under to fly free as long as they sit on a parent's lap. Children over two will be charged the same as an adult as they "occupy a full seat." It appears that you will have to carry your two year old and pay $2,400.00 for you and your three year old.
