Do you carefully select your leashes, collars, etc based on quality construction, functionality? Or do you just buy based on colors or whatever they have at PetSmart? Would yuo be willing to pay extra for guaranteed quality, smart design?

My dog has a collar for every day of the week and plus some. He has collars that are designed for comfort and strength and then he has his fun collars. The fun collars I do not trust as much but they are more a designer thing, so he uses those if there is company coming or I am taking him somewhere that he has the Gentle Leader on. His leashes match the collars and they are all the thick heavy duty ( they match color wise not design). He is a large dog and it is hard to find the thick heavy duty collars that are designer. If I could find them I would buy them. His main collars are the comfort design (extra interior padding) but straight plain colors.

I generally can't find anything decent at PetSmart or any of the other "supermarket" type pet stores. I buy most of my stuff at dog shows because that's where the quality is, plus they've got a lot of things these pet stores don't carry. That's where I get collars (which I do pay more for), leashes, but especially grooming stuff - brushes, coat conditioners, etc.

I look for funtionality, quality and durability first when selecting products for walking my dogs. Collars must be able to hold, and withstand vigorous tugging and pulling, same for leads and leashes. I learned my lesson when one of my puppies energetically tugged at her leash while I was trying to restrain her, and it broke and she had not yet learned the come command. She started running into oncoming traffic and it was an unbelievable nightmare unfolding in front of me as I chased her and prayed she'd stop before she got hit. Thank goodness, she did. I check them thoroughly when buying, and daily when getting ready for a walk. The thought of her getting hit was and still is frightening to me. Spend the money for quality. When inside, in a controlled enviroment, I can go for some little pink fro fro, but if it can't take a tug, I take a pass, no pretty thing is worth my baby's life! You can find good quality leads, leashes and collars without forsaking fashion. Also, when looking for toys, I check them VERY GOOD for items that can come off, like eyes, hard pieces, squeakers and the like, as my little guy was playing with a new toy I had gotten him and he was chompimg away making the toy squeak like mad in his kennel (which was open....he uses it like his personal condo) and all the sudden he stopped squeaking. I didn't realize he'd just swallowed the squeaker inside the toy and was now choking, he didn't make a sound, but I looked up to check and see what was up, and thank goodness I did, as he was trying to gag it up, no sound, but I could tell something was desparately wrong. I ran to his cage and pulled him out and managed to pull the squeaker out of his mouth so he could breathe. Poor little guy, I think he thought he was in trouble with me, cause I was screaming and crying trying to get it out of his mouth. Never again with cheap toys! I watch them when they are playing with them, and when they are done I have a big basket I throw them in that sits behind a chair. Since my pups are IGs (Italian Greyhounds) they have long thin necks and you have to be careful cause they are a little silly about things, and just like you wouldn't let a baby play with just anything, you also have to be careful with your pets. I look for entertaining (for me and them), fun, things and yes, I'd be willing to pay a little extra to have a garantee of quality and design for a product. But if my dogs don't play with it, or it was dangerous, I would surely bring it back or take a pass on it. Not worth my world coming to a crashing end over a $1.

As long as the leash has choker capabilities, I'm happy.
