Suppose Jesus never existed. I could not then believe He is my Lord and Saviour, right? It seems that I would not end up burning for eternity automatically just for dying, so it seems I would not end up in Hell fire and brimstone for eternity.

Therefore, it seems that if it had not been for Jesus Christ, no one would end up burning in Hell fire and brimstone for the rest of eternity.

So, perhaps we should thank Jesus for Hell.

Jesus talked about a place called Gehenna where both body and soul r destroyed, but never preached fire and brimstone. Gehenna was based on the valley of Hinnom where trash was burned and dead bodies of criminals that were unfit for burial were thrown. Pagan religions had invented that immortal and torture concept way before his time such as the egyptians , babylonians, greeks, and persians. At John chapter 11, Jesus likened Lazarus's death to a condition like sleep. Please also read Ecclesiastes 9; 5, and 10.

answer: lots extra probable that folk placed words interior the mouth of Jesus. No, the theory of eternal torment would not exist in Judaism. Neither does the prefer for a savior, unique sin, a scapegoat, human sacrifice or divine messiah. All of that (different than the unique sin) have been pagan ideals. To sell the hot faith, Paul needed to make it some thing that would entice pagans and then scare them with communicate of instantaneous doom and threats of hell in the event that they did not connect. He took the religion to the pagan Gentiles because of the fact Jews found out Jesus wasn't a messiah (maximum probable a insurrection against Rome, it is why he became into achieved).

Hell fire, yes. However, the patent on brimstone is actually owned by a small holding company founded by Aaron Levite(brother to Moses).

No. Before Jesus came all holy souls stayed in a place called the "Bosom of Abraham", and when Jesus fought the devil and won he took all those souls to heaven with them. So if you believed, you were in a nicer place than those suffering in a pit of fire and brimestone

Jesus did not invent it because He knew it didn't exist.
The closest thing to hell we'll ever know is here, now, and the good suffer just as much as the wicked.

I know I'll get pilloried by the fundamentalists for this!

It gets worst. Jesus brought the concept of Hell to believers. Before Jesus, God did not have an eternal damnation in hell listed in the OT.

Thanks Jesus.. Thanks a lot.

I think it was the Persian prophet Zoroaster who first preached the idea of a final judgement and then heaven or hell.
