+ There may be shorter commitments for Reserve only. They used to Have a SAM(Sea Air Mariner) program and APG(Advance Pay Grade) there may be other plans.
Active duty seems to have a minimum of a 4 x 4 program.(4 yr active 4 yr reserve). Some say that you should sign up for the shortest as they give resigning bonus' on a second and third enlistments. During the time you should go into the rate that has the best deal.

all contracts are for 8 years. The Navy does have a program called national Call to Service, whereby you are only committed to 15 months of Active Duty, beginning as soon as you graduate your A school, followed by 24 months of Reserves time. The remaining time can be in the reserves, or you could go to the IRR.
a regular Navy enlistemnt is anywhere from 4-6 years Active duty, after that, you can choose to go reserves, IRR or stay AD. the length of your AD commitment is based on how long your A and C schools are.

standard enlistment options are 4 years active and 4 years reserve with an option to reenlist after your 4 years active. Option B you can enlist for 6 years and not have to serve any time in the reserve.

Depends on how much you enlist for. Im in the air force you have 4 and 6 year enlistments and I know now they even have 2 year enlistments. Im not too sure about the navy though Im sure its all the same. I would contact your local recruiter.
