In America, we would call people from Spain "Spaniards".
We call people from South America "South Americans", or call them after their country (e.g.; "Bolivians", "Brazilians", "Chileans", etc.)
And don't worry about your English; it's better than many Americans I know!

In the US, in English, we usually call the language Spanish and the people Spaniards, but you could say either without being wrong. Some people in the US mistakenly call anyone who speaks Spanish a Spanish person. If you want to make sure you are properly understood, say you are from Spain, just like you did here.

Spanish . . .
Great flamenco dancing, lladro porcelein, and guitar playing.
The use of vosotros and the 2nd person plural is a little difficult at first, and the accents from Barcelona are pretty heavy.
No confusion with South Americans.
