There could be several answers to your question. More often than not, people join the military to escape. These people try to escape from their small towns, mundane lives, etc. They feel they dont have anyway out (and some may not) so they join the armed forces to see the world, get an education, and get out of the strangle-hold of smalltown, USA.
Its sad these people feel they have to become trained killers to leave their smalltowns. They dont have a mind of their own so they follow a group of "mentors" that breakdown their sense of self and "re-build" these people as thoughtless robots who just follow orders (even if it means taking human lives [and in the case of the USA, many of which are innocent lives]).

To serve the nation and most join the army because they have personal problems, no money, maybe get money for college or run from the law.

You would have to ask the man. Some join for the pride of serving their country, others for the college benefits, and others because they feel that they have no other choice. It all depends on the man.

I joined the army with lots of enthusiasm when I was young and I was ready to kill at the first given order.
Today I recall how shallow was my view of life and I'm horrified.
The people I wanted to kill are just like my kids today.

There are many reasons. I have alot of family in the military. They could have scored low on the ASVAB, easier to get in, shorter training then Navy and Marines, besides Air Force. Alot of them just don't have money to go to college, or they have no where else to go. Maybe its just in their best intreset and their passion.

In many cases it is because of tradition, their grandfather/father was in it so they want to be in it as career soldiers. In other cases it is just for a job, a lively hood or it was a good idea at the time.
