Bad things happen to ALL people.
There is no such thing as someone leading a "charmed" life, where nothing goes wrong. (the one who calls himself the "witless" may think himself the exception. I call it "denial.") Life is full of joys and sorrows. It is called the "human condition."
There is no argument that some enjoy more comforts than others, and some live in poverty. Their "good" and "bad" personal atributes have little to do with what their lives throw at them.
As a child, I never knew my family was poor. I am convinced that I got as much "joy" out of reading someone else's used comic book as any other child got from getting a new one. My stubbed toe hurt just as much as a wealthy child's.
Regarding "karma." Some people believe that the balance need not be restored on this physical plane. Some believe that there are an infinite number of lifetimes to acheive this. Others believe that existance is eternal, and that sooner or later, evil will be punished and good will be rewarded.
And then there are the rest of us. For us, the physical laws of entropy do not apply to the concepts of good and evil. They simply "are."

Karma does not nessessarily denote bad things. There is good Karma and bad Karma depending on the choices we make each instent of the day. Bad things happen to good people for the same reason a child falls and injures him/herself : bad judgement, or for the same reason good people get cheated : a question of knowledge and who to trust, or for the same reason the United States is loathed internationally : the actions do not reflect the rhetoric. Countries have Karma as well. Put briefly, Karma is the result of an action, whatever it may have been.

Karma isn't a magical force that punishes "bad" people and rewards "good" people. It's just cause and effect. If I steal something, I will have guilty feelings, I create the possibility that I will be caught and punished, I might lose my job, and I could have a criminal record that will make it hard for me to find a job in the future. Conversely, if I help someone selflessly, good things can come of that. There are other, much more subtle aspects to it as well that don't involve anything as obvious as stealing. It's not good vs. bad, it's the results of your actions. Of course there are things that are beyond anyone's control, that has nothing to do with karma as I understand it.

Are you doing good things in the expectation of getting good things back? Well those good things may be happening and you may be missing them because you are expecting something else. Don't give away More than you can afford, it doesn't work like that. And if you are doing it purely for the reason that you want good things to happen? Check out every thing you do, Karma will payback eventually.

A very good question. The concept of Karma has been introduced precisely to answer this difficult question you have raised. The theory of Karma stipulates you are paying for your your sins in your last avatar! No way to challenge it!

Your assumption is that bad things 'always' happen to good people. It's simply not true. All things, good AND bad happen to all people, good AND bad. No karma, no fate, no destiny, no reincarnation, no afterlife, just LIFE. Live it or not, it's up to you.

2 reasons I could think of, a) your actions in past lives could have consequences (this obviously falls apart if you don't believe in reincarnation/rebirth). b) (poss. more convincing) not everyting is caused by karma, its not black and white simple. Karma is just one instance of the principle of dependent origination and is one of only several layer of causality. You also need to take into account physical causality, biological causality, psychological/mental causality, as well as karmic (and dharmic though I don't fully understand this) causality.

Its all a matter of the choices you decide to make in life. For every action there is a reaction. We don't always stop and think that far ahead to see what the reaction is going to possibly be to the action we decide to take right now. I have just decided that if I'm going to worry about it, then I don't do it. And if I decide to go ahead and do it, then I don't worry about it. And I always try to stop and think about what is the worst that can come of my actions, and if I can live with the worst.

Bad things don't always happen to good people, just sometimes. Bad things happen to all people, whether they are good or bad, just as good things do. You just have to not be miserable and get on with it!
