I found a very small kitten on the street and I took her home with me. I plan to take her to the vet tomorrow. What else can I do for her now? How can I keep myself safe from disease?

Hi, and glad to hear you were kind enough to help out. I've been rescuing animals forever as well. Really, you have nothing to worry about as far as getting sick from the kitten. Worse thing she could have is fleas, and a fast bath with a kitten-safe product (might need to bathe a couple times) should do the trick. When she's old enough I find "front line" works great. Only if she's going to be an outside cat though, otherwise you don't need it unless there's an actual flea problem. The vet wil take care of everything else. Good luck and have fun with her!

I SEE IN ANOTHER COMMENT THEY SAID TO PUT FLEA MEDICINE ON HER, DON'T DO THAT!! YOUNG KITTENS ARE NOT READY FOR STRONG FLEA MEDS. AND IT CAN BE HARMFUL EVEN DEADLY TO SOME. ONLY USE A KITTEN APPROVED PRODUCT- AND ONLY IF YOU KNOW YOUR KITTEN IS OLD ENOUGH.

Well get her some food (maybe a little milk if that is all you have at this moment) some water and as soon as you can get some kitten food and a litter box or if you have a friend near by that has a cat see if you can get some kitty litter from them so you can make a litter box, if you are not going to keep it. I don't know what you think you could get as far as a disease from the kitten but until she gets checked out just wash your hands often. The only other thing I can think of is maybe fix up a box or laundry basket with a nice soft towel or blanket and maybe a toy or two.

Firt of all you cannot get any disease from a cat unless she has rabies and that is very unlikley you would have noticed it by now. Just make sure that she has food and water. If you have any other pets keep them in seperate rooms until you have the new kitty tested. Good for you for rescuing this poor kitty. Oh yeah and keep all your windows closed or she will be gone. If she is really just a baby then make sure you get her really good kitten food i would talk to the vet about it.

First you should check the kitten's ears make sure that area isn't dirty, if so take a damp cloth and just wipe the kitten ears, the you'll want check fleas and ticks. Also what you want to do is check the kittens gums, if they are pink and healthy looking she'll be fine, but still take her to the vet for a thorough examination.

Get her to the vet as soon as possible! If she's a kitten she needs much nourishment. Make sure you keep her warm and give her plenty of fresh kitten food and water. About the kitten food, make sure that it is not CAT food. Kitten food has the vitamens that cat food cannot provide. Good luck!

well give her a luke warm bath.. just a nice rinse off no soap please do not use any human soaps or detergents. It is way to strong for their skin even just a drop can cause irritation and burn. warm water and towel dry her.. to clean her up a bit. She may be too young to clean herself. be careful not to get water up her nose or in her ears. I bet you can do this in a sinkShe may not like it but it will help her if she smells.

Humans and Pets rarely transmit diseases and the main one rabies is transmitted by saliva in broken skin.

If she has fully cut her teeth go to the store and get kitten food any kind will do. If she wont eat it wet it a little bit with water so its soft but not soggy. Purina and Iams are popular brands one just costs a lot more. . If she doesn't have teeth you can get her kitten formula. Please do not give her milk. Cats shouldnt drink regular milk so please dont feed her milk. Its a myth and many people do it but your kitten is way to young to experiment milk with.

Make sure she has access to water you should make/get her a litterbox and show her where it is. make sure she has a warm place to lie down.. like a pile of towels or blankets in a box/ hamper . Keep her warm. Maybe give a stuffed animal of some sort or pillow to snuggle with. Kittens like to be held close like up on your chest or by your neck under your chin. Higher voice pitches are also soothing.

Kittens will explore on their own please do not force it.

Also do not place food near the litter box. Good Luck! your vet should be able to help you more tomorrow.

you'll be fine!!! cats arent as disease ridden as most people would like to beleive!! for the moment just get her some wet cat food and a little litter box. Show her some love. Cats dont really need too much, they're pretty independant!!

Love her, feed her, be her friend, the rewards will be worth it. Everything happens for a reason. Someone wanted you two to be together now it is up to you to decide what to do.

I wouldn't worry about diseases. Just wash your hands after handling her until you can get her to the vet for a checkup.

Give it food (cat food, not human food) and water. Taking it to the vet is the next step, and it sounds like you've already planned that.

The chances of you catching anything other than a cold are very remote. (ringworm--infinitesimal)
Vaccinate her for rabies, FIV, and FeLV, then decide what to name her.
If kittens were that germy, I would have died thirty years ago.
