Yes.

This is the second one I have built.

The first one I converted a closet to a 480 bottle cellar. The cost was minimal since I built all of the racks myself out of redwood stock ($200), and used a small WhisperKool ($500) unit to maintain temp and humidity.

The second, in our new (old) house, is a 1500 bottle cellar that we can entertain in. It is 13 feet by 9 feet. This one I had Vigilant build the racks to my specifications ($12,000), and installed a large WhisperKool ($2,500) to maintain the cellar. I built the rest of the cellar including electrical, framing, insulation, vapor barrier and drywall/paint. I also assembled all of the racks myself.

A friend of mine build one for his garage using 4x8 3/4 plywood, rigid insulation glued to the plywood; cabinet hinges, and window clasps for the door hardware. The racks are built using 2x4 kiln-dried lumber. He put a small WhisperKool unit in the thing. It cost him total about $200 to store a barrel and 20 cases of wine.

The recommended temp and humidity is 55 degrees F and 65% humidity. Based on a recommendation from Robert Parker, we keep our cellar at 59 degrees. This cut the electric bill significantly. The most important consideration once the temp is below 62 F is to keep it constant and keep the humidity around 60- 65% also constant. My cellar is very stable.

Other options are wine cabinets that come fully assembled. You just plug em in.

Yes I do, it is under my house. It shares a space with my unused household items. It is a series of shelves on which I store my wine in the cartons I purchased it in.It is on the coolest side of the house [that is temp. not style]. There is no mechanical cooling. There is no cross draught from outside, so even on the hottest days it stays cool. Consistent even temp.is the best preserver of bottled wine. You do not need to spend a fortune on professional cellar builders. Why are you keeping wine? For regular consumption? As an investment? How much can you afford?Good wine kept in simple, sound conditions will continue to develop. Styrofoam boxes,[the fruit mart variety] were used by a friend to create a cellar which aged some beautiful wines. Keep it still, keep it cool and keep it away from draughts and remember the better the wine that goes into the cellar the better it comes out! Enjoy

A wine cooler takes a wine from room temperature and chills it immediately to a ingesting temperature - it would desire to have diverse settings for whites and reds as they might desire to be enjoyed at diverse temperatures. A wine cellar is a climate controlled environment for the lengthy term storage - or cellaring - of wine.
