ok everyone so far that has answered is a failure in life. depending on where you live, you can get a fully automatic firearms AND a silencer. you must have a class III license, which is pretty hard to get. then you have to find a class III dealer with machine guns transferrable to individuals. as for the silencer, check your local laws, because some states they are illegal, but some they arent. then contact GEMTECH or another company and inquire about prices and if they can ship to your state. you might need a class II license for a silencer. also you cant convert your AR-15 to fully auto by yourself. it must be a class III dealer that does it for you, and you must also have your class III license.

People answering firearm questions rarely have any idea what they are talking about, and it really irritates me. You can get both these licenses (for a cost) by going to your counties Sheriff station and filling some paper work, then wait (usually it will take months maybe a year). However all of the states can choose which class III weapon types you can get. Many do not allow full-automatic arms, but I believe there is only few that do not allow silencers (see the link below). If you do get a silencer and a full-auto AR I HIGHLY suggest you do it legally, otherwise you WILL go to jail for a long time and never be able to own a firearm again.

Spikestar, Dylan and Ranb40 are correct. It's a tedious process. Not actually a permit but called "Transfer tax".

One more thing to think about if going with a Class 3 weapon, is that if you have issues with it, like a part breaks, you will not be able to have a regular gunsmith work on it. You will need to find a gunsmith that specializes in class 3 weapons. They will be expensive weapons to have worked on, and if an internal component breaks more than likely will have to be made by a machine shop.

To make a silencer, machinegun, or short barreled shotgun/rifle, all one needs to do is fill out the ATF form 1, get it signed by the local sheriff, and then send it in with a check for $200 along with fingerprint cards, photos and a form attesting to US citizenship. It takes one to twelve months usually to get it back approved before making it. THERE IS NO LICENSE REQUIRED. I know because I make my own silencers at home. To manufacture one (as a business) you need to be a Special Occupational Taxpayer ($500 per year), no tax paid on item until they are transferred to others, or until you go out of business.

You can make your own machinegun, but it has to be for the US government or the police. The police can request that you make one for them; it would be called a "post sample". If you want to buy one, then an ATF form 4 is submitted with the same paperwork as above. You can only legally buy machineguns that are in the NFA registry that is, registered by May 1986. Thank Reagan for that one.

There are 36 states that allow civilian silencer ownership, since I live in Washington and can not own machineguns, I do not know which states allow ownership. Take a look at www.subguns.com for info on making and owning. There are guns for sale on the site too. An M-16 will set you back about $12,000. A registered drop-in auto sear for an AR-15 will cost the same. Since supply was fixed in 1986, and demand as increased greatly, prices have soared.

Edited to add. There is a lot of stupid crap in this section. I suppose ant_20004 can name just one case where an American civilian used his/her legally owned machinegun to commit murder in the USA. I know he can't, and the only reason ant_20004 is suggesting that someone would go to the trouble to get a legal machinegun to commit murder is that ant_20004 is stupid stupid stupid.

Fill out the paperwork. But actually you would do better getting a already selective fire wep instead of mucking about with what you have.

If you are an LEO, there are many cool companies. Before I retired I picked up an M3A1 grease gun with silencer for $125.00 3 30rd mags.

actually the silencer is not much papaer work involved, and the ar 15 lower will not be made fully auto, it was made semi auto, now you can buy a lower receiver if it was made before 1986.if you can find, and afford it. you can't buy parts to convert, unless you like bubba in a cell telling you to clean his drawers. end of story,

Fully automatic..okay: obtain a Class-C Federal Firearms License from the BATF.

A silencer...only the military can have silencers legally.

There are websites on making silencers, but if you cruise the gun-shows, you find at least one guy willing to literally sell you one from under the table from which he's hawking his wares.

Hell, you could just save you self the trouble, and trade the AR for an M-16 when you find that guy.

y would u wanna even get that registered. the only reason u would use it is to kill ppl. the best thing to do is to get it handle ur business and get rid of the gun. when they come looking for u they will see that u have type of stuff at ur disposal and will seriously investigate u.
