Is it ok to have a beer or a glass of wine every day in front of my toddler girl?

Question

glass of wine every day before dinner. I never go beyond that.

My 2 year old child watches this and she says that daddy is drinking juice.

So is it OK for me drink before child every day?

I have struggled with this personally as well. I have 3 boys and my kids were all too curious about why I wouldn't let them drink the "juice" when any other time I would let them drink out of my cup with other liquids. I explained that it was a grown up drink and didn't help little kids grow big and strong. I also decided to poor the alcohol into a different glass so they couldn't see the label. On occasion, I would buy them the non-alcoholic fizzing grape juice and they, of course, thought that was big stuff. I think it's a personal preference and it's your business. Personally, I don't think it is harmful as long as you drink responsibly and have limitations. You as a parent know what they are. If you feel wrong about it, then do it after they go to bed.

yes i feel it is ok to have a glass of wine in front of your child. But I don't think i would lie to your child making her believe it is juice. Beings what if you get up from the table and she takes a drink believing it is juice. I would tell her that it is daddy's drink and it is yucky for little girls/boys to drink any.

I have to agree with Trid, displaying responisble use of alcohol in front of your child will provide a buffer against all the irresponsible usage she will see when she grows up a bit. I think you should explain that you are drinking wine, because it is a grown-up drink that makes your dinner taste better.

If you have no compunction whatsoever, in drinking in front of your daughter, then suppose some day she drinks like you too....what excuse will you use to stop her from doing so ?

What will be your reason for telling her why not to drink ? Perhaps you should go a little further. Try some kind of drug, little bit of drugs ever day, but do it front of your daughter.
Suppose someday, you tell her not to drink. What will you say if she says that she has seen you drink. So if you can drink why cant she drink ?

You should see the movie " Trainspotting ". There is a very nice description of what happens to a little baby when the parents are busy using drugs.

Children are very clever and they understand a whole lot more than you will ever give them credit for. So instead of having two different standards try to follow a single standard for yourself and the Kids.

It's fine...in fact, it's important that you demonstrate responsible drinking habits. The child learns more by example than by words.

If she sees daddy only having one with dinner, then she sees that that's all you need. If she were to see you getting blitzed every night, that would send the opposite message.

Bottom line, shielding your child from life makes them less responsible because they're unaware...not safer.

I would say it's fine. Especially if you discuss it with her and let her know that alcohol is a legal substance approved for ADULT consumption. Also you can point out to her that daddy only ever has one, because you know how to be responsible. I've let my kids know that alcohol can be a dangerous thing (for various reasons) when used irresponsibly and that it is not for people under a certain age.

Well if it bothers you then don't do it, but other wise if it is only a glass then go ahead if you want one.
