I'm afraid you have out grown regular "cars". You are looking for a 7, or more, passenger vehicle. That means minivans, vans and SUVs will be your main target. As far as safety goes most are reasonably safe but check the particular vehicle's crash rating. More stars are better with the best topping out at 5 stars...
A trip to the library and some looking through Consumer Reports magazine could pay so very big rewards. Their ratings are said to be as impartial as any. I understand they purchase everything they test, i.e. manufacturers are not permitted to submit product examples for testing.

A good and safe car that is also reliable (a necessity for a family of five) is the Subaru Outback wagon. Good mileage, good road view, and very safe. It is also made in the US.
The all wheel drive will help in poor weather too. And no I'm not a salesmen for them.

Both Kia and Chrysler have mini-vans with 5-star crash test ratings...may not be "cool" like SUVs but they cost less, get better gas mileage, are cheaper to insure, and are cheaper to repair/maintain than SUVs.
