There is this local pub next to the Crowne Plaza hotel called the Bampo Beer Hut. Probably the best bar I have ever been inside. It is like Fred Flintstones cave. There is also an area that is the "South Beach" of Beijing if you will. Bar after bar. You need to be careful in ordering your drink. For example if you get a rum/coke they might try to bring you a shot of just rum. Then you say where is my coke and then they bring you a coke and charge you for that as well.

I was there for 5 days and we did a lot of exploring on our own, however nothing in specific I can tell you. We met a student who brought us to where students had painted these lovely painting on silk paper and I ended up purchasing one. They were actually painting they were to be selling in order to finance a school trip to Europe. So I didn't bargain for this at all. Have you gone over to Xi-An? This is a great side trip from Beijing to do the Terracotta warriors and it's the oldest city in China. The original capital. It is a completely walled city and to just walk around in China is entertaining for me. I love some people watching and just venturing out on my own. Be careful in doing this though.

I love the shopping in the markets and bargaining. Love to buy silk products when I was there. I hope to return soon as China has been one of my most memorable trip so far.

It depends what you would like to do in the city... Are you interested in night life, or in interesting people watching venues, in historic sites, temples, shopping?

For each one of those there is something worth exploring outside of the normal tourist stuff like Forbidden city, Wangfujing etc.

If your interest is night life, the area around Chaoyang park has many interesting bars and restaurants, the area near the Workers' Stadium has those too. Then you have Haidian district where many of the Universities are. In 1987/88 that was a very different place (that is when I first lived in Beijing) and now is a crazy place with many interesting venues.

If your interest is people watching, go to one of the many malls....need not say more...

Then there are tons of temple in and around Beijing - which by the way are not in the travel books. Go to the Red Snail Temple (north of Beijing)....

Do you have a car or access to one? That could open a whole other set of interesting places outside within one or two hour driving from Beijing. In the mountainst north of Beijing you can explore many villages and beautiful sites.

I can see that lots of the people that posted here haven't been to Beijing before.

Some great places to visit:

Forbidden Palace/City - Home of many Chinese dynasties
Temple of Heaven - Religous and symbolic symbol of the Chinese culture
Tiananmen Square - The largest open-urban square in the world
Summer Palace - Vacation spot of Chinese emperors
Great Wall - The name explains it
Ming Dynasty Tombs - The name explains it
Wangfujing(Shopping Mall) - A pretty big shopping center, all sorts of things to buy

There is many places that serve peking duck, most restaurants will serve it

To the person that posted above me, terracotta warriors are at Xian :)

Just wander the hutongs since they are going extinct pretty soon. When I was there for study abroad, I just basically wandered around trying to get lost, took the subway, tried out different restaurants, went to big underground markets, and the KTV bars. Beijing is definitely a bustling city, there's always something to do.

the two are splendid, or incorrect. based wherein language you write it. Beijing is the chinese language call derived from Mandarin chinese language Pinyin. that's the respected call used in China. Peking derived Cantonese "Bak King". Peking is i.e. used in Germany, and a large form of alternative countries. What different countries are making use of perhaps diverse from usa to usa. I checked some words, that are all splendid of their own language: ???? Pekín Pèquin Pak-kia? ????? ????? ????? ?????? Pekino Baekging ??? Pékin Béising puppy-kîn ??? Pechino ????'??? Peken Pechinum Pekina Pekinas Pechin ?????? Báe?k-g?ng ?????? Pequin Beyjing Péqùin Pechin Pequim Pekini Pechinu ??????? B?c Kinh Pek?ns
