Colonoscopy is test to visualize the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. A colonoscopy may provide a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and allows for biopsy of suspectious lesions.

A colonoscopy is recommended in the investigation of many diseases of the colon. It allows doctors to see exactly what is happening inside the colon and allows biopsies to be taken for analyses.

The colon must be free of solid matter for the colonoscopy test to be performed properly. For one to three days, the patient is required to follow a low fibre or clear fluid only diet. Then, on the day before the colonoscopy, the patient is given a laxative preparation and large quantities of fluid.

During the colonoscopy procedure the patient is often given sedation intravenously, employing agents such as midazolam. The first step before a colonoscopy is usually a digital rectal examination, to examine the tone of the sphincter and to determine if preparation has been adequate. The endoscope is then passed though the anus up the rectum, the colon, and ultimately the terminal ileum. The endoscope has a movable tip and multiple channels for instrumentation, air, suction and light. The bowel is occasionally inflated with air to maximize visibility.

During the colonoscopy biopsies are frequently taken for histology. Suspicious lesions may be cauterized, treated with laser light or cut with an electric wire for purposes of biopsy. Medication can be injected, e.g. to control bleeding lesions. On average, the colonoscopy procedure takes 20-30 minutes, depending on the indication and findings.

The answer to the second half of your question is : YES it does detect colon cancer !

If you are scheduled to have a colonoscopy done. The day before you will be given a large jug of material to drink, I call it embalming fluid, although that's not its real name.
The next day when your intestines and colon are squeaky clean an instrument containing a tiny camera and other mechanism will be inserted into the colon, The doctor will be looking for polyps ( lumps on the inside of the colon ). The instrument loops over and slices off the polyp.
Small polyps are very seldom cancerous, but if neglected will almost always become cancerous. Don't worry about any discomfort. In all probability, you'll be off to sweet dreams until it's all done.

Please see the webpages for more details on Colonoscopy.
A colonoscopy (koh-luh-NAH-skuh-pee) allows a doctor to look inside the entire large intestine. The procedure enables the physician to see things such as inflamed tissue, abnormal growths, and ulcers. It is most often used to look for early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum. It is also used to look for causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits and to evaluate symptoms like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and weight loss.

hai,
colonoscopy is a good endoscopic procedure in which a video endoscope is pessed through ur anal canal in to large intestine. in colono scopy we can see the large intestine and can detect any cancers, polyps, hemorrhoids(piles), diverticula and movement abnormality of the large intestine. it is also uesful in lower gastro intestinal bleeding, we can see in the video trasmitted by endoscope and we can detect and take biopsy or if possible we can do some therapeutic procedures. its a good procedure and no doubt i recommend it for lower gastro intestinal problems
