Diabetes is a disease that can affect anyone. Overweight people have a greater risk if becoming a type2 diabetic, but if diabetes is in the family line than even a thin person can be affected by type 2. My daughter is type 1 diabetic and even though I am not diabetic my Mother and many of her siblings are diabetic, both type 1 & 2. Unfortunatly it can affect anyone in any family.

being skinny doesn't make you immune, sometimes skinny people can get type 2 diabetes and many other "obesity" related diseases.. the thing is that obesity puts you at a HIGHER risk.. but being skinny doesn't make that risk go completely away.. proper diet and exercise is the healthiest thing you can do for your body. and it's actually healthier to have a couple extra pounds than to be pretty skinny, so long as you are in good shape and eat right.

The likelihood of a generally physically fit person developing diabetes as an adult is very low (pregnant women notwithstanding as it is generally temporary). However, a person who was born with or developed juvenile (Type I) diabetes will have it for their entire life regardless of their fitness.

That said, recent reports claim that a cure for Type-1 diabetes may only be a few years away.

Thin people can get diabetes.
Please be informed that Diabetes Mellitus is of two different types: IDDM and NIDDM
The IDDM ( Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus ) occurs mostly to THIN and YOUNG people. It is also called Type 1 diabetes. In IDDM ( Type 1 ) diabetes, the body ( beta cells present in the Islets of Langerhans in the Pancreas ) does not produce any kind of insulin either due to removal of pancreas in some surgery or due to pancreatic failure. In IDDM the patient has to take Insulin Injections.
The second type and most common type of diabetes is NIDDM ( Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus ) or Type 2 diabetes. In this case, the body produces insulin but this insulin is either insufficient or it is poor in quality ( medical term is insulin resistance ). Type 2 diabetes mostly happen to obese people.

What many people are unaware of is that obesity is a symptom of one of the pre-diabetic conditions - hypoglycemia - low blood sugar. That is why I gained my 100+ pounds more than I need. I am now diabetic. However, my skinny sister is also hypoglycemic, and will possibly switch if she does not take even better care of herself than she does now.

The body tends to produce more insulin as one ages despite one's weight.. High insulin can cause the body to become resistant to it, thus not allowing insulin to do its job of putting sugar (glucose) into the cells for food. The sugar stays in the bloodstream causing the "high blood sugar" reading, but also causing other problems, such as eye problems, neuropathy and slowed healing.

Diabetes is hereditary. Skinny people can get it, but overweight people have a greater chance of earlier onset. I had a skinny grandma and an overweight grandma that both passed away due to diabetes.
