I just got my nephew (8 yrs. old) a terrarium kit to raise frogs. I thought it was awesome, and so did he. The kit comes with all of the equipment you need and a card that you send in to have the tadpoles shipped to you. I'm anti-video games in general--I figure if their parents want to let them have it, that's up to them, but I try to always buy "smart" gifts that are cool and fun but actually engage their minds...

Speak to his parents and find out if he might like a book or a cd.
He may want some type of toy too. My nephews had a big craze for these things called diablos. 10 years old is not too old for a cool toy.
Some kids love clothes believe it or not as long as it isn't boring stuff. A cool tee shirt goes a long way. Honestly I have nephews who are around this age. If the child is into sports...voila....a cap or a jersey of his favourite team.

My 12 yr old is into video games but I'm always looking for something different. They seem to "veg out" all the time with those games! Last year, I had him list 5 things...WITHIN REASON (no trips to the moon or japan for the big video game conventions!LOL) but 5 things in the area or within 1 or 2 hours drive time, that he would like to do. Parks, shows, movies, ice skating, wall climbing, tubing, canoeing...whatever...but let him pick those things, put them in a hat and have him pull one out. Tell him its his day and he's running the show so to speak...Good luck! my son had a blast.

I have a 12 year old son who lives for video games. Get him a gift certificate for a gaming store around him. Don't try to pick anything out for them unless they tell you EXACTLY what they want. Trust me - get the gift card and he will be a happy boy!

How about giving him a gift card to his favorite store and put certain amount of money on the gift card. I have a 10-year-old brother myself, and he's into video games. Whatever I give my brother-whether its Christmas or his birthday, he appreiciates it very much.

A skateboard, a soccer/ruby t shirt of his favourite team, tickets for a special event (concert, fotball match) a remote control car, a baseball bat, a fishing rope...it depends on what he enjoys best (a part of video game),

What about action figures?? OR maybe some sort of music system. These are the kinds of things that my cousin is getting and he is 11 years old

Well a bike, a set of rollerblades or something of that nature would be good for a boy of that age. it will not only get him off those games, it will help him get exercise and make friends. so try it.
