Hong Kong is an Island which until 1997 also governed Kowloon and the New Territories up to the Chinese border, all these now belong to China. When people say they are going to Hong Kong it usually means Hong Kong Island or Kowloon. Hong Kong Island is only small, about the size of the Isle of Wight, Kowloon is on a tip of China and about 20 miles deep, New Territories went on for another 30 miles.

Most of the above answers are correct. If planning to visit the Hong Kong Tourist board have a very usefull website. If you want to get a flavour of HK then you will only need to stay at week at most. Generally cost of living is high, linked to housing costs but there are bargains to be had. Haggle at Stanley market and if you can visit with a local who has a HK ID card then you will get better discount.
