Depends what kind you are talking about. There is HSV 1 that is the "oral herpes" but can be other places. HSV 1's preference point is the mouth and is contagious. More people have this than don't. Other names for HSV 1 are cold sores and fever blisters. HSV 2's preference point is the genitals, but that also can be transmitted other places.

Herpes is a virus that once contracted stays in the body for the remainder of your life. It lays dormant in your nervous system until it's ready to surface periodically. Stress is a common trigger for an out break.

Outbreaks are blisters, sores on your body that arrive in little clusters. You are contagious at any time NOT just durring break outs. There is something called "shedding" that happens every so often. I guess that's when the virus is present or something but you do not experience symptoms.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Herpes is basically a cold sore. Horrible but true, very common, many people don't even realize that they are the same thing. Very painful in some cases, but very treatable. All you have to do is go to your doctor and they'll give you antibiotics. Hope this helps a little more ;)

Herpes is a viral infection, which comes in two strains. One is herpes simplex, which causes cold sores. I forget what the other strain of herpes is called, but this causes genital herpes (warts). These go away with treatment, but the virus will remain dormant in the body, and once contracted, the patient will have 'flare-ups' every now and again when the virus is active, and can also be transmitted through sexual contact.

Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease.

Type in "herpes" into any search engine and a plethora of sites with information will come up. Look for medically based sites, not sites trying to sell you treatments.

Herpes. One thing. A virus. Different forms cause different diseases. One form causes chicken pox and shingles, another causes "cold sores", and there is a genital form, sexually transmitted, that causes GRIEF. Check this site for more information:
