The neighbours let the dog out into the garden at any time and just let it bark. I would like to know of any (non harmful to myself or dog) solutions other people have used successfully.

Contact the dog warden at your local council. We had 3 dogs next door that never stopped barking. A letter from the dog warden did the trick and they have been kept quiet ever since and we had been suffering for years.- I still wonder what was written in that letter from the council but I wish I'd done it years ago. Now I need to solve the problem of the screaming granchildren from the same neighbour.

I recently had the same problem. A neighbours dog was left out in the garden and howled all day when they weren't in. I spoke to them about it (very politely!) and they said they would do something about it. They didn't. I spoke to some of the other neighbours and found that they were all fed up too. I volunteered to phone our local Council and I spoke to the Dog Warden who sent the owners a letter saying that a complaint had been received (the council won't tell them who made the complaint) and they sent me a "noise diary" to keep if the dog continued to bark. This can be used if the matter has to be taken further. Luckily, in my case, the letter from the council seems to have done the trick and we are not disturbed any more. I know that collars are available which are supposed to dissuade a dog from barking but I have no knowledge of whether they work. I would suggest that in the first instance you talk to your neighbour and explain to them that the noise really disturbs you - maybe they don't even notice it. Good Luck!

I wish you luck with this one. I have exactly the same problem only my minging neighbours also let the dog stay in their bedroom (which is only seperated from my room be a wall) when they are out working nightshift and the bloody thing barks through the night. I don't want to make enemies but I think I'll have to call the council. I've tried shouting at it but they take no heed.

Some of my other neighbours are also starting to complain so maybe you could see if your other neighbours are also pissed off with this and then you'd have a stronger case.

Personally I feel that dog owners should be vetted the way foster/adoptave parents are. That way only responsible people should be allowed to have dogs.

P.S. Can anyone explain why I got a bad rating for this answer - perhaps my neighbours are on Y!A ?

Have You Tried Talking To Your Neighbour???
Maybe They Are Used To The Dog Barking And Don't Realise It Can Be Annoying To Other Neighbours....
If No joy After You Have Spoken To Them I Would Go To The Local Environmental Health And Explain Your Situation To Them...
hope This Helps.....

You're kidding yourself if you think there's gonna be an easy answer to this one. There are only two things you can do...
1.)Talk To You Neighbor - I know some people don't like confrontation but really, the ower may be so used to the dog barking that they may not even realize it bothers anyone else. It may be as simple as that. If that talking to them doesn't work.....
2.)Call the Law - Legally, you are not allowed to do anything else. You don't want to give the dog peanut butter because depending on the breed, it can choke on it, then you'd get slapped with a law suit. Keep it simple, if you've done all you can, get the law involved. Unless they want to lose their dog, the law will make them do something about it.
Good Luck!!!

I feel your pain!!! I have an ignorant neighbor that lets the dog bark hours on end!!! I am so tired of it. We have a noise ordinance and you can phone the pound and they will send someone out....I am going to start doing this (this is a big Nerve with me right now!!!). I hesitated to phone police because I don't want to be that B****Y neighbor that makes the call when the other neighbors are just to nice!!! The other thing I am going to purchase is the Bark Stop....depending on how close the little bugger is to you it may work. Work the $60.00!!! It is funny that the ignorant owner just assumes everyone else wants to listen to their noise pollution!!! Oh I do have 2 Westies.....when we are in the yard and they start to bark.....in the house they go!!! Good luck!

If the dogs barks in the process the night, call the neighbor no count what time it rather is. in simple terms tell him you're conscious because of the fact his dogs wont end barking, now he's conscious too. whilst the neighbor gets bored with being woken up everynight, he will handle his dogs. If that doesnt help, call your community dogs warden and record a nuissance record.

Hey didn't you ask this question the other day???? Just go over to the neighbours place and tell the dog owner to shut the dog up. Nicely of course and try to work something out.

And if that doesn't work, there's always the RSPCA you can call upon to take the dog away.

You can make a complaint with the city or county - there may be an ordinance in effect that would then let the sheriff's office or police then talk to the owners and make them control the dog's noise.

That'd be your first step. You have absolutely no legal right to do anything to the dog - and remember it's not the dog you want to be mad at but its irresponsible owners.

Have you considered talking to your neighbor? Just simply saying to them, "your dog's barking can be a little excessive sometimes..."...something on that order. If that doesn't work, then report them to some of the authorities mentioned in other answers.

My neighbor has two little yappers and was always asking me if their barking bothered me. They didn't do it a lot so it really wasn't a problem. But the fact that she was aware of my feelings made it even more bearable, ya know?
