I would say you need more incentive than this. You know how many schools (public or otherwise) there are in America? Bringing the kids home may make you feel a little better, but it doesn't make much impact on the insignificant odds of some maniac coming into your kid's classroom.
However, you may be concerned about the influence that peers may have on your kids, or about your child needing more attention than a teacher of ~20-child classroom can afford to offer. You need a good reason to homeschool because once you're in it, you find yourself wondering why - especially if you've got children that aren't too convinced about doing what it takes to become educated.
There's plenty of resources out there if you do decide to homeschool. Your library would be a good place to start. My wife highly recommends 'The well trained mind' by Susan Wise-Bauer. It's practically the bible for homeschooling parents.

Do it! We had some many problems with raiseing a grand daughter and public school. She had been through so much and didn't want her thrown in with children we didn't know any thing about. It didn't cost that much and we are on social security.
Her dad helped some but it made such a drastic improvement in her life. You purchased her a computer for school and later one in the house for her home work. Calling it our's !
It was the best thing we ever did and the other parents said the same thing. There was no sports, except they could go over to the high school for local sports events but it wasn't distracting from what they were learning. Do It!

Well, in my opinion, the definition of homeschooling is teaching your children at your home. I really could not recommend you taking your children out of school to have your friends homeschool them. Would you pay them? Would you have any interaction with their learning? I've been approached several times by friends that asked me to teach their kiddos along with mine, and everytime, I turned them down. They offered to pay me, and I could always use the money, but that is such a difficult situation. There are too many things to consider when deciding to educate your children at home, that it is not a decision that should be based on emotion or what's going on in the world.
My advice to you is, if you cannot dedicate yourself to teaching your children at home yourself (and there are many, many options for working parents and single parents) then you should leave them where they are.

Do you have any problems in your particular school? Of course this kind of thing can happen anywhere, but you should really think about this before you make your decision. Will your child get the social interaction they would in regular school? Social interaction is very important and teaches your child to deal with different kinds of people and develop relationships with children of their own age.

It's up to you, but considering that there are thousands of schools and millions of schooled children, the chances are still small for it to happen in your area.
We do not home educate because of violence; we home educate because we love it, because we get to grow together as a family, because we want our children to have happy and memorable childhoods, because we feel that they'll get a better education at home.
If you are going to home educate, do it for the right reasons, not for fear. But you know what, if that IS the reason you want to do it, then go for it...it is your right and your choice. You have EVERY RIGHT to shelter and protect your child despite what anyone else has to say. ;-)

No. You are becoming hysterical to believe this is a common occurence in society. It is a myth. Without question, the single safest place for kids is in school.
Look at it this way, by analogy:
If you see a bad car accident, and somebody get killed, do you stop driving?
If you see a plane crash killing many, do you stop flying?
If you hear of child getting killed walking across road, do you forever keep child from crossing roads?
Wouldn't it just be best to lock children into basement for the rest of their life, to "protect" them?
Oh my, and you want to be a teacher???? How dare you ask such a question with such little knowledge of life.

maybe you should look into private school...if you can afford it anyway! it is probably a more controlled environment. and they will get a better education than at public school!
