A chihuahua will remain small, but a small bulldog like an English bulldog is probably better for a young child. Bulldogs are very good around children - there are few different ones, including small ones and they are very calm animals. It's a nice idea to get her a pet, but you should realize that you'll be doing all of the work - so think twice before you commit.

Look at miniture and toy breeds, but you have to be careful because a lot of them are tempermental and aren't good with children. They tend to snap and bite. Do some research online or check out the book "Encyclopedia of The Dog". It has a lot of useful information about dog breeds as well as raising and training them. Hope that helps!

Toy breeds remain small but tend to be tempermental(overbreeding). Small terriers(Boston15-25lbs,Jack russell 7-15 etc) are a great, energetic, and loyal. You also might want to consider daschunds (can be tempermental, get a puppy), malteses (great dogs very mellow), or West highland terriers(well behaved and very loyal).
