If you're trying to play a .wmv (Windows Media Video) file in QuickTime, you won't be able to because it's a video codec developed by Microsoft and isn't supported by Apple (developers of QuickTime). To successfully play Windows Media content on a Mac, you've got three options;

1. Download Flip4Mac:
Flip4Mac is a plugin by Telestream, Inc., which enables you to play Windows Media content (video and audio) directly in Apple's QuickTime Player.

2. Download Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X:
.wmv files were intended for playback using WMP. Both technologies are developed by the same company so won't have a problem playing most Windows Media files.

3. Download MPlayer:
MPlayer is a portable media player which has some support for Windows Media content.

The download link on this site isn't that clear. Look for "MPlayer OS X 1.0pre8" in the data table and select one of the HTTP or FTP servers to begin downloading.

I would download VLC Player. That can play any file.
